Default R.I.P. Nightcrawler

I was bummed today to read that my all-time favorite superhero - Nightcrawler - died. It was totally different from most other major comic deaths; I was simply reading my regular comics and discovered it as it happened (no big marketing campaign or press announcements for this one), so it surprised me.

Still, he went out heroically, sacrificing himself for someone else, so that was cool.

I wonder how many years it will be until they bring him back.

Marvel had a golden opportunity to kill off Cable and put a stop to a big chunk of the royalty check they have to pay Rob "I still can't draw to save my life" liefeld and instead they killed off Nightcrawler? Of all the idiot things Joe's done. . .

I liked him better before they made him into a Catholic fanatic.

I bought the Nightcrawler Miniseries when he was a swashbuckler in another dimension... That was awesome.

Other than Mort Weisinger era Jimmy Olsen, who routinely got turned into giant turtleman types, became Hitler's Astrologer or went around as "Agent Double Five" (not kidding!), Nightcrawler was the biggest Weirdness Magnet in comics.

Knocked out in a castle, he's woken up by Leprechauns who ask him why half of him is invisible... He manages to enter a dimensional portal that takes him to a world Kitty Pryde made up putting the X-men in a Fantasy pirate saga.

Of course, Bucky came back, Barry came back, and Kara came back so many times it makes your head hurt. If the "Permanently Gone!!!!" guys are back, how long before Kurt returns?

I was bad and read the issue at the store while the little guy was collecting comic on Free comic day. Decided I didn't want him seeing the blue elf like that. Almost makes me want to start collecting again.... almost.

You're right about the weirdness aspect, and that was part of what I liked about him. I've always hated Limbo, but when they do cool paranormal X-Filesish adventures, then that was really awesome.

Besides the ones you mentioned, S.D., don't forget Colossus, and Superman, and Jean Grey, and...

Jean counts. Claremont REALLY intended her death to be permanent, something not the case with most comic book character deaths But that was mostly because he realized after the fact that he made Phoenix waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to powerful in order to get the X-Men out of a jam and rather than retcon it OR have her powered down, he opted to keep her too powerful for the universe to allow to live.

And killed her.
