Prompted by the Celtics' recent ascendancy, Jemele Hill writes about why Hate Is Good in sports:

So, what are the teams you love to hate?
The Yankees. Because of them MLB has seen a rate of inflation that boggles the mind.

Boston...because I like the yankees.
Hate and rivalries make the sports more interesting.

I think I'd have to go with Duke's (men's) basketball team, although they have gotten somewhat less annoying than they were in the days of Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Cherokee Parks. The Notre Dame football team is a distant second. They'd be closer, but they're just so bad right now, it's not that much fun to root against them. I mean, Navy beat them this season, and the last time that happened, Roger Staubach was Navy's QB.

Bah. The Raiders are just so much cheating, bad attitude trash. Especially compared to those gentlemen the 49ers.

The Los Angeles Kobes.
Don't get me wrong, I've been a lifelong fan of the Lakers. Forcing Malone out turned gritting my teeth into outright rejection. When and if that team reemberges as the Lakers when Mr. Bryant retires or makes a deal with some other team before he retires, it may well return to my favor. But the LA Kobes forced me to do the unthnkable and that is unforgivable. I am now, GOOD LORD!!!!!, a Clippers fan.

Yankees. For the George Steinbrenner fustercluck--especially his treatment of Billy Martin and Lou Piniella. It's amazing how well the Yanks did during the years he stopped meddling (i.e., 1996-2000).

When I was growing up, I hated the Houston Oilers, or perhaps more specifically, their theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvWn_yGaA-Y). That thing used to drive me nuts, although I don't mind it very much now. It's probably no worse than the Chargers' theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDiCxhtGMhc), for instance.
Also, growing up in the corner of MI that gets all the Chicago stations instead of the ones from Kalamazoo or further east, I remember having a pretty complex viewing/rooting relationship with the Detroit Pistons of the late '80s/early '90s. They were a very fun team to watch when they just played ball, but I didn't really appreciate their brand of gamesmanship that much. It was very satisfying to see most of them slink off the court before the final buzzer when the Bulls swept them in the '91 ECF.
EDIT -- Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CepkO_buVEk) is a link to the Chargers' theme song with better audio.

The Yankees, of course.

But nobody turns my stomach quicker than Notre Dame.
