As the backup I hope and pray...

McNabb, Eagles divorce?

As you may have heard, there's a big to-do in Philadelphia over Donovan McNabb -- what else is new, right? -- and what he supposedly did or didn't say Sunday to Fox sideline reporter Pam Oliver regarding his future with the Eagles.

Oliver reported at halftime of the Cowboys' loss to the Eagles that in speaking with McNabb off camera during warm-ups she got the impression that he thinks his days in Philly are numbered, and that he's hurt by what he believes is the organization's effort to distance itself from him. McNabb denied making those comments to Oliver, who stands by her story.

Now I wasn't present so I'm not qualified to speak on what he said or she heard. But I can tell you what I believe: McNabb's days in Philly are numbered. And he doesn't feel as though the Eagles have his back.

Which is why when McNabb and the Eagles file for NFL divorce after this season I believe it will be as much the player's decision as the team's, if not more.

Put yourself in his shoes: You're 31. Your replacement already is in house. Your employer has a history of cutting ties with aging players sooner rather than later. There's always media speculation surrounding you and your status as the "franchise" quarterback. It seems as if the city has never truly appreciated what you've accomplished over the years without a great receiving corps.

On the airwaves and in the papers they're always ready to give your job to Jeff Garcia, or A.J. Feeley, or Kevin Kolb (and those were just in the past year).

If you were McNabb, would you want to subject yourself to that kind of drama for another year?

Even if the Eagles don't try to trade or release him, it won't surprise me if McNabb tries to force his way out of town. He has a mega contract that runs through 2013, but he knows he won't see the big bucks at the end of it.

Why would the Eagles update his deal to his liking -- as they were discussing with McNabb's agent before McNabb was injured last season -- when they've got Kolb waiting in the wings? Surely McNabb would prefer his inevitable departure happen now rather than when he's two or three years older and won't command as much from another club.

Regardless of what any of the parties involved have said publicly to the contrary, McNabb will play for another team next season. At this point I don't think that bothers him one bit.

McNabb + Lions receiving corps + Mike Martz = Playoffs!

McNabb has been giving every indication of being a headcase for the past few years.
<shrug> Somebody will take a chance on him, but it's a lot more likely to be Minnesota or Chicago than Detroit.
(And if Minnesota, coached by McNabb's former OC takes a pass, his stock drops considerably.)

It's cheaper to buy a QB than to buy an *entire* O-line. Detroit needs both.

But if your O-line sucks, why invest a lot in a free agent QB that will end up spending way too much time running for his life?

Because we can draft an O line which seems the better way to go about it anyway...

what QB in his right mind wants to come a team that can't pass-protect, ****?

parz: i don't think that mcnabb's a headcase. on the contrary, i think he's got his head screwed on straighter than a lot of people in the league. i'm curious why you hold that opinion. ?

Half that problem is Kitna having the scrambling ability of a stone statue only without the coolness of s Statue of Liberty play...

He's had a lot of public blow-ups. Both with other players, with the coaching staff, and with the media.
And somehow, he's always the victim.

TO was a headcase.
But that about half of the team supported this recently-arrived headcase over their established QB... It means something.

****, there are legitimate knocks on Kitna, but that isn't one of them. He's above average at scrambling, and fearlessly sells out to get that extra yard.
Nor is the Detroit O-line as bad as you're implying. It needs improvement, but the biggest problem is play-calling. Martz is in love with the long passing game, and those routes take time to develop. <shrug> Defenders have been clamping down on the hot read, and stacking a side with more bodies than blockers.

You people are getting your messy reality all over my happy dream!

And Kitna blows chunks. The most sacks in the league isn't all his fault but part of it has to be laid at the QB's feet. I waiting till after the season but a certain thread from August is going to get resurrected in January. :sawink2:

parz, i live in the philly market. everything i've seen indicates to me that mcnabb, embattled though he is, is getting a raw deal from the philly fans. he's a fierce competitor, is finally showing signs of the scrambling ability that's been absent all season, and i think that business re: part of the locker room rallyinig around TO is more indicative of frustration w/ not getting far and having an otherwise lackluster receiving corps.

Funny, but a few weeks ago you were aknowledging that your statements with respect to Kitna were in error.

He isn't the ideal QB (his arm strength, accuracy, and recognition are only "average" by NFL standards), but you'd have difficulty finding one that's tougher, a better leader, one that brings his intensity to game preperation, or a better role-model for young players.
He's exactly the QB that the Detroit Lions need right now.

A few weeks ago it appeared that he was doing a good job. Six games later and it turns out we were chasing a mirage. That's why I'm waiting till the end of the season.
