Excluding the Yankees - Red Sox which is undoubtedly the greatest sports rivalry ever, what is the fiercest sports rivalry?

Ah yes but in the last 15 years a half dozen national title runs have turned on that game and each school has scrapped the other's dreams of #1 enough times for there to be LOTS of bad blood on the field. :sawink2:

Just take a moment to consider how many times U of M vs. Ohio State has determined the Big 10 Championship one way or the other...

Unfortunately neither do I so I blocked myself out of my own thread.

All of the Teams in the NFC hate each other. I think this is because it is consistently one of the most competitive divisions in football.

As for your Giants ed. The Cowboys are coming, and they aren't going to play nice.

Seriously, unless Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan live in the Cowboys backfield (not that haven't been doing that lately)I think it's going to be another long day for the Giant DB's.

The Dallas DB's should match up better as well with both of their starting CB's on the field.

But then again a weeks rest agreed nicley with the Cowboys and could do the same for the Giants.

In pro football, far and away Chicago vs. Green Bay.

College:
Winner: The Army-Navy game.
Runner up: DePauw vs. Wabash
With lots of honorable mentions. Citidel v. VMI, The Holy War (BYU v. U of U), Alabama-Auburn, Amherst v. Williams, Juniata College v. Susquehanna, Kansas v. Missouri.

It helps a rivalry if there's something actually at stake when the two teams play... :sawink2:

Agreed. Just too much history there.

Meh. When was the last time Chicago and Green Bay played a meaningful game though? I can't think of an instance where that matchup mattered in the last 15 years. (I'm not saying that they haven't played any meaningful games but rather that beyond the general rivalry of two NFL teams it hasn't been notable during most of the last generation is all...)

Now looking at the Colt's Patriots during the last 10 years or so...
Or at the Packers vs. the Lions...
Or Bronco's vs Raiders...
Or Raiders vs Bucs...

There's a lot at stake, it's just not necessarily something as trivial as standings in a division.

The Boise State-University of Idaho game is coming up soon. In the standings, it means very little. But it's a *huge* game and rivalry. With most of the rural state united behind U of I, and the urban Treasure Valley behind BSU. (This is a common theme, you can see the same dynamics in the upsoming Apple Cup. And Jessa will happilly tell you about the UK-U of L rivalry.)

Rivalries have nothing to do with standings.
They're a proxy battle over other more important things.

rivalry can certainly exist absent importance but the great rivalries are great because of what's at stake when they meet. Not just because they don't get along.

The Chicago Green Bay rivalry is all about history. These teams have been division foes forever. Including the plaoffs they have played 163 games agaist each other.

The Colt Pats are a great rivallry but not an all time great.... yet.

And yet in the last 15 years there hasn't been that much at stake when they meet. The packers have played more important games with the lions in that timeframe... They're two very storied franchises but as rivalries go i wouldn't say there's anything great about it.

Excluding college, where the rivalries don't translate well to non-locals:

I'm not sure there are any. They tend to be transient. I'm not sure Chicago / Green Bay gets the blood flowing like Red Sox / Yanks.

Celtics Lakers in the 80s, but that has petered out.

Bruins vs. Canadians in hockey is the only other "long time" rivalry I can think of.

Patriots / Colts may get there.
