Helping the wife make her first D&D character (gnome bard). At the end we were chatting and I was suddenly struck with inspiration and brilliance. My next character is gonna be a halfling bard. The type of halflings from FR that don't speak but have short range telepathy. He will have Perform: Clown. He will be dressed as a little clown at all times. His instrument will be one of those little horns with the big ball you squeeze to make it honk. He never speaks. Just walks around in big clown shoes honking his horn, but everyone seems to always understand him ('cuz he's telepathic).

Skills focus on pickpocketing and other crowd working skills. I think there is HUGE comedic value in this character, and if I wasn't so eagerly looking forward to my Warmage (and the wife wasn't already playing a bard) I'd do it right away. Eh? EHHHHH? :D :D

oo, you could be even more offensive and play a kender bard! :D

i like the concept. question is, why is he driven to be a clown?

You know.. that's a really good concept. I might steal that at some point, if you don't mind.

It could be funnier...

It could be a Half-Orc.

It will require a houserule, since all bardic spells have a verbal component:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/bard.htm

And the sort of perform skills that can be used for spellcasting also have a verbal component such as singing or poetics.

If I were the DM, I'd rule that the horn is your verbal component. There is a variant rule for Sleight of Hand in the one of the Races books (Races of Stone, I think?) that allows you to cast stilled silent spells by using Sleight of Hand to conceal your gesture. I'd recommend asking if you can do that.

Make sure the bard has 92% combat effectiveness.....

He has. Over on the "seperation of church and state" he's been publicly flaying somebody alive.

To much applause from the peanut gallery.

Ever consider switching to a game that has more acceptable Bard type characters? Fantasy Hero, for example can give a discount on magical abilities and spells because an instrument must be possessed and played.

Build a wizard normally. Apply the discounting llimitations, use the saved points to a) make a more owerful mage/bard, B) give her abilities suited to a musician slash rogue type or even C) a warrior type.

I want to play a Bard who is an organ grinder. I'd give him a familiar (monkey) and have him Fascinate listeners while the monkey picks their pockets. It would be great, I tells ya!

Yeah, but if you get a wabbit to replace the monkey with a gorilla, you can make LOTS more money... ;)

I think an advanced dire ape or a girallion would be tons more fun than a monkey. But you have to have one of those little red vests on them, and a little red hat.

Be wary about the red hat however. If the red vest gets changed to a white suit and the ape is a bit over weight, he's suddenly dressed like a villain. ;)

So a Bard/Mindbender then? :D

Either that or you add tons of the mixologist skill and make the character a bard/tender.
