View Full Version : The Breaking of the Fellowship, Thread 2 (Leo, overnight Tues. 3/27/07)

This thread will be dedicated to the in-the-flesh investigation of Samantha Drake's residence. The Kindred involved here are Leo, Sarah, and Adrianne.

EDIT -- I think I gave 5-530 am as the end of the window for activities that wouldn't be threatened by sunrise, so we'll say the meeting time for heading back to Mr. Johnson's boat is 430 am.

Huxley

Leo stands staring at Drake's house. His hood is pulled up and over his face, and he keeps his hands in the hoodie's pockets. After glancing around to make sure there are no mortals nearby, he pulls the cell phone out and calls Jack. He puts the cell phone back into his pocket without waiting for an answer. While looking upwards at Samantha's house he tells Sarah, "Probe her house for any voodoo while I survey the property from the outside".

Leo begins walking around the place, looking for windows, doors, nearby grates, ladders, or anything that seems out of the ordinary.

Almost immediately after the call is placed, Jack says "Set your ringer to vibrate. If the call gets dropped, I've got the better chance of seeing the call isn't in effect and will have to call you back. It could be very... annoying to have your phone ring while you're there."

The house appears deserted, it is completely dark and the windows are tightly shuttered. There's the main entrance in front, a servant's entrance in the rear, and doors to a cellar near the rear entrance as well. A large chimney goes up one side of the house. The cellar might seem a bit out of place given that coastal Louisiana is prone to heavy seasonal rains.

Sarah looks intently at the building for several seconds before reporting that there is indeed some sort of "voodoo" in play after Leo has completed his visual inspection.

"I'd say it's an alarm ward of sorts, surrounding the entire building, most likely attuned to detect the presence of both corporeal and astral intruders. I don't think anything will happen to us if we cross it, but Drake will almost certainly know we're here once we do."

Turning towards Adrianne, Sarah asks her, "Did Samantha have much contact with the city's Tremere? It would take a fairly sophisticated practitioner of Thaumaturgy to ward such a large house against both bodily and incorporeal intruders, even for a simple alarm ward."

"If she did, she kept it secret from the Toreador," replies Adrianne. "What about this renegade Tremere of yours, this Lucian character? Could he have done this?"

Sarah gives a little shrug and says, "I don't know, I never heard of him before very recently ago. It could've been him, I suppose, it sounds like he's had a while to practice."

"Perhaps we should ask her," says Adrianne with the barest hint of a droll little smile. "Shall I knock?" she asks as she moves towards the front door.

Detritus

Adrianne knocks on the front door, but there isn't any answer. The door is locked.

"Doesn't seem like there's anyone home. Now what, do we go in?"

Leo concentrates, and waits for the animal to respond to his call.

OOC: Alright, then. Is there a shed, or a garden, or some sort of unkempt part of that 100 acres that's sprouting some bushes? Or something else to hide behind? If not, well, I'll go for the animal anyways, and see what happens.

Detritus

There are some bushes on the manor grounds you can hide in without too much trouble.

You can use The Beckoning to call a stray cat to you. It takes a little while for it to arrive, say 15 minutes. So now you have a stray cat with you. What next?

Also, I assume that Leo is just using Fatigue at this point to power his Animalism (?). It would be 4 Fatigue to do this, and another 2 for a use of Feral Whispers. Or substitute a Blood Point per 2 Fatigue...

OOC - Something Leo would probably realize, in the kitty's roundabout way, it's asking, "What do you want me to do while I'm in there?" If you just send the cat in there with no instructions on what to look for, you'll get the cat's-eye view of the interior, which will probably be good enough on the level of simple visuals, but it's still only a cat, with all the mental limitations that implies.

The uses of Obfuscate you describe will cost 14 Fatigue total. You are presently at 11 Fatigue. I'm pretty sure you can't spend yourself below 1 Fatigue, so you'd have to spend at least 2 Blood Points to do what you want to do. I'll also have to refresh my memory on how you'd function at low Fatigue.

You could rest for 40 minutes to get back to 15 Fatigue if you don't want to spend any Blood Points, but there is still the low-Fatigue issue in that case.

I checked up on the Fatigue rules -- you can operate as normal so long as your Fatigue is at least 4. Melee weapon damage remains the same, but if you have to do anything that requires an ST check, then you use your Fatigue value for your ST.

The rules also allow for dining characters to regain an extra Fatigue if they dine while resting, and I'll say that's in effect here. So Leo is at 12 Fatigue at the start of his exploration of Samantha's residence. He can spend 8 Fatigue and 3 Blood Points to fuel his Obfuscate. This would put him at 4 Fatigue and 6 Blood Pool. I recommend this because bad things can start to happen to your Self-Control if you feed with less than 5 Blood Pool.

I'll adjudicate/narrate what happens with the break-in shortly.

Detritus

You obtain solid success in your Obfuscate efforts. You are able to Mask and Vanish for a full 50 minutes each (max. time without a critical success, actually).

When you get to the lock, however, things stall for a bit. Normally, you think you should be able to pick this lock, but it seems like it might be of relatively high quality -- just good enough that it thwarts your efforts at picking it, in fact.

After a few minutes pass and the door doesn't open, Sarah and Adrianne come up to it. Sarah asks if she may be of assistance in the general direction of the doorknob, and then without waiting for an answer, she kneels so that her eyes are at the knob's height. She then places her hands near the knob and closes her eyes. As she concentrates, you see that she closes her eyes a bit more tightly without first opening them.

A few seconds later, her eyes pop open, she stands, and moves her right arm in an exaggerated arc. She raps on the door a single time, which then obediently swings open. With a bow, she extends her right arm to open the door for you. As you step towards the open door, she gives an obviously fake cough and extends her right hand in your direction, while still remaining in a bowed position...

You don't feel anything in particular when you walk into the house. You recall from Menachem's report that it's two stories plus a basement, and that the impromptu meeting with Samantha happened in the master bedroom.

You've got about 45 minutes remaining for your Obfuscate to go through the house. Anywhere in particular you want to search, go through the whole house, ...?

There are 12 bunks in the fallout shelter, and they look like they have all been used recently. The mattresses all look compressed from the weight of regular usage.

You don't find any journals, itineraries, bills, or the like when you search the upper floors. They are well kept, and there is fresh mortal food in the kitchen. The walk-in closet in the master bedroom is filled with a fairly large, tasteful wardrobe for both the casual club-hopper and urbane socialite on the go. The decor would have been fashionable in the 1920s, but would seem old-fashioned to modern eyes. There is a phone in working order on the first floor, in the parlor.

In answer, you hear a silenced pistol shot, and then Adrianne gets a slug to the belly. At that you do see two individuals emerge from the shadows, one on either side of the road you are on, armed with shotguns, although neither weapon seems to be trained on you. The nearby gunman is about 10 yards from you, the other gunman about twice that far, and the car is between you and him. Off in the distance, where the little road you are on leads into a larger road, you see a pickup truck parked at the intersection, maybe 100 yards away.

Now what?

(FYI, if you start to grapple while Obfuscated, that will give your opponents a fairly hefty bonus on their Vision rolls...)

It'll take about 15 seconds to do this at a walk. The far gunman is approaching your side of the road at a walk in his own right. If you want to run sneakily, the Stealth roll would be at -5 to skill, but you could position yourself in 4 seconds. If you spend a Blood Point, you can erase the penalty.

Your yell is answered with shotgun blasts -- Sarah seems to be able somehow to jerk around the far gunman's weapon enough to wreck his aim, but the hapless Adrianne gets some shotgun action to the chestal area to go with the slug in her belly.

At this, Sarah runs forward until she closes to about a body's length away from the near gunman, points her right arm at him, and uncorks a brilliant, fist-circumference jet of flame that is nearly 10 feet in length, and it absolutely scorches her target. He freaks, drops his shotgun, at starts running with sprinter's speed and more towards the pickup truck, burning all the while. Adrianne has kittens while lying on the ground at the sight of the flame, but really isn't in shape to flee the scene. Sarah turns toward the other shotgunner and promptly gets hit with pistol fire in her left shoulder, which drops her to one knee.

You don't see the pistol wielder during your running sneak, but you seem to have no trouble positioning yourself behind the far shotgunner without being noticed. He seems a bit stunned in the aftermath of Sarah's flame wielding, and presents an inviting target...

It'll take a couple of seconds to do this properly.

In the meantime, you hear Sarah get hit with another pistol round. She cries out then falls flat on the ground. The flaming gunman continues to retreat towards the pickup, then after a few seconds of sprinting starts to roll around on the ground to put himself out. Adrianne is still pretty much a wreck, but she does gather her wits about her enough to start healing herself.

You manage to wallop your opponent with a solid roundhouse. Just after you connect, you hear three pistol rounds shot off in your general direction. One of them actually hits your opponent, the other two whiz by you. The shotgunner is showing definite signs of entering frenzy.

The remaining shotgunner fires wildly into the air, and then starts wildly swinging his weapon with a one-handed grip on its stock. He latches on to the closest target, which happens to be Sarah. She gives a wordless cry of alarm and instinctively thrusts both fists in the direction of her would-be assailant, blasting him with twin jets of flame. Almost immediately after fire meets with Kindred flesh, the shotgunner bursts into a cloud of vampiric ash, and his weapon falls to the road with a metallic clank. Adrianne gives birth to a second litter of kittens.

Your form and that of the sniper's are now outlined. You manage to correct course enough to score a glancing blow which knocks the both of you off-balance. You hear a pistol round sail by your right ear, and a grunt sounded by a feminine voice. You then hear hasty footfalls beating a retreat towards the pickup truck. They sound fast.

The retreating footsteps start just as soon as you regain your balance, and a swirl of ash confirms the direction of the sniper's retreat.

"The sniper is running to the pick up truck! Get in the car", Leo yells to the other two as he runs to the car. He sees Adrianne and curses. "I'll need your help, Sarah. We'll come back for you Adrianne". He tries to be in persuit of the pick up as fast as he can.
Sarah's kind of groggy at this point, too.

Also, there's a dead guy at the wheel. With his brains splattered about the front seat. Remember that scene from Pulp Fiction? It's kind of like that.

You may, if you wish, shove aside Dieter's body and go after the pickup (we'll say the keys are in the ignition), but Dead Guy Passenger + Nosferatu at the wheel = Bad Masquerade Math. I'm just sayin'. I guess you could also dump his body and then pursue, but some of his remains will still be in the front seat.

The pickup starts to roll out just as all this stuff finishes occurring to you.

Leo stops and goes dead pan. The pickup starts to drive off.

"Damnit!"

Leo uncharacteristically pounds the hood of the car and grimaces. After regaining his composure, he walks to and kneels by Sarah "How do you fare?".

"I've been better," she says, "but I don't think I'm as bad off as she is."

You both turn to look at the recently hysterical Adrianne, who now lies on her back, deathly still.

"Now she knows," says Sarah, "she knows what can happen if you suffer a witch to live."

She gets up and casts a weary, mournful gaze upon Dieter.

"Oh, Dieter, I'm so sorry," she says. "I can't count the number of times you've helped me, but I wasn't there, I wasn't there in your moment of need," she continues with a break in her voice.

Collecting her poise, she says, "You can help me, this one last time," and then sinks her fangs into Dieter's neck.

After a few seconds, Sarah turns to Leo and says, "If you're thirsty, there's still some vitae left. I don't know where Dieter went, but he isn't here anymore, so take it all."

((OOC -- You recover 4 Blood Points if you drink Dieter dry.))

Surveying the front seat, Sarah says, "What a disaster. We can't drive around like this, we have to get things cleaned up. And we have to hide the bodies...

"How was the housekeeping in the manor?" she asks. "Can we mooch some cleaning supplies off of Miss Drake's estate?"

((OOC -- Yes, you can.))

((OOC -- It's going to take a couple of hours to get things cleaned up. Sarah will also perform the light-reflecting ritual and make everything but the windshield impervious to light.

During this time, Leo and Jack may talk on the phone. The clean-up and the scouting of the second high school will take place at roughly the same time, although Leo & Co. will be on the second boat back to Mr. Johnson's haven.))

Jack calls Leo.

"I think we need to talk, somewhere where mystical observer types aren't allowed to look and listen. Machine guns and dynamite change the rules and I think... well I'll tell you later. I might have a supernatural eavesdropper here."

"There were. I'll go grab them."

"In the meantime, keep your head down. The guys Ramiel and I encountered look like reckless amateurs armed with nasty weapons. You can make security foolproof but not idiot proof."

"See you in a bit." Jack says and hangs up.

Leo closes the cell phone, and walks into the house to grab the cleaning supplies.

Upon returning Leo asks Sarah, "Did you recognize any of our assailants? Perhaps from Lucian's brood?"

"I didn't recognize anyone. The pistol sniper, it sounded like it a woman's voice when you ran into her. Were there any women in Lucian's gang?"

Leo grabs his chin in thought, "Not that I recall. . . still, too many signs, too much influence. . .".

Leo sighs, and shrugs. "Let's get this cleaned up as fast as we can, then head back".

It'll basically take the remainder of the time you have ashore to clean, stow the bodies in the trunk, and do the light-reflecting ritual. Leo can sit in the back and hide in the shadows. Sarah also makes a phone call early on in the cleanup procedure to report to Rebekka.
