"I know how you feel. I wish I could scream like this." Aefe thought tiredly to herself as she held the sobbing girl in the center of the protective circle surrounded by the spattered remains of her boyfriend.

"What's your name?" She asked yet again, but the girl was too hysterical. Racking her brain quickly, her own tears still wet on her face she handed the sobbing girl into the sturdy arms of Steve, ignoring his indignant and uncomfortable glare.

Steeling herself for the unpleasant task she knelt quickly at the side of what had been a boy… until the zombies he’d probably summoned had torn him to shreds. “This is no worse than autopsy class.” She muttered to herself as she dug through the squishing and fragmented remains to finally pull a blood covered wallet from his pocket.

Opening it she glanced at the name on the id…..

One question, first.

Do you have sterile gloves?

One question, first.

Do you have sterile gloves?

Yup. Sure do.. That's how I bandaged Mike and took the samples. Part of the forensics/med kit I have. Given a chance, the id is going in a sterile baggie too.

Inside the bloody wallet is a driver's license:

David Riggs
Age 17

He lives in Nebraska.

You also find a library card, and twenty-seven dollars in small, bloody bills.

The wallet is black leather, and literally dripping with blood.

Glancing around to see who's in the masoleum, Aefe carefully slips the bloody id card into a sterile baggie. The wallet follows in another baggie.

If the only people here so far are Steve and the girl, Aefe will pocket the id but hold on to the wallet openly.

If others are here, she'll take a moment to memorize the information on the id and keep it in the open with the wallet.

Most of the soldiers are resting by the truck. Lt. Lewis is having someone pour cold water from a canteen over his head after puking his guts out. Mike is on to of the mausoleum failing his spot checks. Nobody is really paying attention to you.

Aefe slips the id into her stash and then with a second thought slips the library card out of the wallet too but leaves the money there before replacing the wallet into the boys... ur...*gags*....pocket sans baggie.

Turning to Steve, she says, choking down the bile... "I think we should get her out of here."

'I hate fast zombies,' Mike thought to himself, too anxious and wound up to grow bored on his sentry duty atop the mausoleum. He wandered the ledge distractedly, feeling unwell.

Not wanting to, but unable to stop himself, Mike lifted the material of his shirt to look at the bite mark. He was pale, and when he wiped a hand across his brow it came away smeared with sweat. He had time for a quiet, almost surprised 'Huh,' before going rigid and toppling off the roof to the ground below.

Jimmy watched Aefe as she went inside a mausoleum to investigate. Steve was her heels yelling something about protecting her. Jimmy just shook his head in disgust. Aefe was a big girl who could take care of herself, otherwise she would not have been hand picked for this team. If Steve was constantly worried about her and not the task at hand he could be a liability.

Jimmy lit up a cigarette cigarette and was scanning the cemetery for more zombies when he heard the 'whump' of Mikes limp body fall to the ground.

When he first saw saw Mike he thought he was dead but upon a closer look he saw that he was still breathing. Jimmy called out "AEFE, MEDIC!" as he disarmed Mike, the last thing he wanted right now was an armed zombie.

Using the strap that held the 12 gauge around his shoulder he bound Mike's hands behind his back as best he could. Jimmy muttered to himself "what I wouldn't give for a ball gag right now".

Jimmy pulled Mike up into a seated position, leaning him up aginst the mausoleum.

"Mike you okay? You in there son?"

Then he called back to the soldiers he had just helped to rescue. Most of them were still in a daze after seeing their friends eaten by zombies.

"LT, I need you to get Aefe and Steve out here now!"

Upon hearing Jimmy scream "Medic!" he started, then remembered the girl he was comforting. Looking down at her and seeing that she was no immediate danger, he escorted her and Aefe outside to a nearby bench and went over to deal with Jimmy and the neatly trussed Mike.

As he approached, he heard Mike laughing in a voice not his own.

As he walked over, he thought Okay. Zombies. Why not demonic possession? He steeled himself to remain stoic.

Raising his voice over the disturbing laughter, he asked Jimmy "He sure doesn't sound like a zombie. I'm thinking this is something different. What do you think?"

Meanwhile, at another location not far away, John Smith stood next to a table with a map of the cemetary on it. An aide stood next to him reading off notes and coordinates from a chart.

A small, quiet man in a black trenchcoat sipped from a cup of coffee.

Suddenly, the small, quiet man started as if he heard something. John looked up. The aide stopped reading. They couldn't tell if the man was listening, or sniffing the air, or both.

The little man walked away, toward the back gate of the cemetary.

John almost seemed relieved.

"That guy gives me the creeps," he said.

Jimmy stepped back from Mike to confer with Steve keeping the 10 gauge level with Mikes head. He didn't want to shoot him but wasn't about to let himself be turned into that.

"Maybe he is just getting in touch with his feminine side? I don't know this is Aefe's field, but I sure as hell ain't gonna untie him. You want to radio back for instructions? I know we haven't got much good intel on the op but maybe HQ knows what the hell this is."

Steve gently pushed the barrel of the shotgun away from Mike's head.

"I don't think that's necessary, Jimmy. He's all trussed up, and we don't want any accidents. Let's just hope he's not injured in any way from the fall off the roof. In the meantime, he might be able to provide us with some insights into what happened here."

"What say you strap on the a weapon and get your hands dirty for once. And how the fuck do you guys always know when it's safe to show up? Do we have our own damn satellite? Now you guys aren't taking Mike anywhere without us before you answer a those and a few more questions."

One of the solders was heading towards Jimmy to cut him off but he would not be deterred

With one motion, two M4s shift from safety to full auto and you find yourself staring down two gun barrels. With a quick jerk, one of the soldiers pulls back a velco patch on his chest, and you see a Captain's bars.

"Soldier, you've had a long night," says the captain. "You've watched soldiers die. I know what that does to a man, so I'm not going to have you court martialed, but I advise you to consider your next words very carefully."

The thin man steps forward.

"Let me be a bit more diplomatic, Private Brown. Your friend here needs help. If we don't help him shortly, he could suffer and possibly die. But I don't have time to stand here arguing with you. If it will make you feel better, we'll let your friend Aefe come with us, but there isn't any more room in the humvee. Now, we shouldn't be gone long, and you have my word that we will bring him back to you safely. Okay?"

Jimmy then returns to his truck, the grill still covered in zombie innards, opens the door and calls to Steve and the other soldiers who survived the op knowing his next words will be breaking the chain of command, but right now he doesn't care.

"Jimmy. Aefe. Please take these soldiers to get some rest and something to eat. I'll go with them to make sure Mike is okay." Steve hoped his request would have some positive effect on them. They looked beat up. After a night like they'd had, he felt just as shredded, but he resolved not to show it.

He waved to Lt. Lewis. "I'll see you later. Remember, you still owe me a beer."

What languages does Steve speak, Mouser?

Ancient Greek
Ancient Hebrew
Mandarin Chinese
Spanish
Irish Gaelic
Navajo
English

Plus he has the Smart Hero Talent, Linguist:

With this talent, the Smart hero becomes a master linguist. Whenever the hero encounters a new language, either spoken or written, that he or she does not know the Smart hero can make an Intelligence check to determine if he or she can understand it. The check is made with a bonus equal to the hero’s Smart level. For a written language, the bonus applies to a Decipher Script check instead.

The DC for the check depends on the situation: DC 15 if the language is in the same group as a language the hero has as a Read/Write Language or Speak Language skill; DC 20 if the language is unrelated to any other languages the hero knows; and DC 25 if the language is ancient or unique.

With this special ability, a Smart hero can glean enough meaning from a conversation or document to ascertain the basic message, but this ability in no way simulates actually being able to converse or fluently read and write in a given language.

A single check covers roughly one minute of a spoken language or one page of a written language.

Prerequisite: At least 1 rank in either Read/Write Language or Speak Language for each of three different languages.

The thin man takes off his glasses, looks you straight in the eye, and says, "Stand here by the humvee for ten minutes. Then wash yourself, get checked out by the medical technicians, and go have a cup of coffee by yourself. Forget about Mike. We will take good care of him."

It seems like the most natural thing in the world.

So you do.

Two things:

1. You have no particularly unpleasant memories of the thin man. He wasn't rude, although a little creepy. But you have a hard time remembering exactly what his face looks like.

2. You have a slight headache for about an hour afterward. But it's been a long night, and a lot happened. So that's completely understandable.

"Who? Oh yeah. Him. Seemed nice. Mike's fine. They'll take good care of him."

I, however, remember the thin man. And I will commit that face to memory because he took Mike and wouldn't let me go with him.

Who does our debriefing? Anyone we know? Our own commander perhaps?

The debriefings are done by officers, and people are with their fire teams with a brief individual debriefing afterward. This takes about an hour, with fifteen minutes for the individual session. Then, you are escorted to trucks which take you back to the airport.

Once in the truck, I check my cel reception again. Is it working yet or is it still blocked?

Your cell phone is blocked, and remains so for the entire trip back to the airport, and then on the plane.

If you have any related skills, such as any form of technology or communications, you can make a skill check.

Hmm.. disable device (I don't see one for fix device), craft mechanical, computer use.

or perhaps diplomacy to get me off the damn plane so I can find those scrolls. :D

Computer Use would probably be most appropriate.

None of you are left alone at any point, and the guards seem very deliberate about moving you quietly and speedily back to your base.

(Just as a sidenote, I'm not trying to frustrate you as a GM, but this is an operation that didn't technically happen, so secrecy is important, here.

I'll have an two epilogues, later: one for Mike, and one for a debriefing that takes place somewhere else.

Ok, I'm sending my computer use roll to your email address. If I can just get the damn phone to work.

1d20 (1 time) ROLL #1: 6 (+ 5) = 11

You just aren't able to figure out how they're doing it, right now.

"Pst, Steve, can I see your phone for a moment?"

Dogged Irish, oh yeah.

I wouldn't expect it any other way.

His phone doesn't work, either. It is receiving no signal.

You fiddle with the phone, but you are certain that the problem is not in the individual unit. Neither his phone, nor your phone.

Are any of the boss men here or only soldiers?

Just you, soldiers, and the guards. Weapons have been transferred to trunks at the back of the plane, and you can clean them when you return to base.

Everyone looks weary, and several people sport visible wounds.

Dang... noone's phone I can even steal.

Hmmm.... at the airfield, are there bathrooms or pay phones?

You are taken by truck to the C-130. Then walked to the back of the plane.

So it's all or nothing. AWOL or I can't let Evelyn or the priest know about the scrolls. *sighs*

Aefe turns to one of the guards and using all her charm asks, "Hey, who's in command of this little exercise anyway?"

Origen

The guard politely but firmly asks you to return to your seat. He is not rude or condescending, but carries the definite air of someone who isn't there to chit-chat.

You already posted a fine story about getting your truck back.

Was there anything you wished to do?

You may, by the way, consider it a possession of yours to do with as you please. You won't be able to sell it on the legitimate market, but ... I get the impression selling wasn't on your mind, anyway.
