I wanted to make a sandwich today and discovered the mayonaise had gone bad, so, casting about the refrigerator I found some sweet red chili sauce

This did not work well on the sandwich

So, what do you think fulfills the same role?

Stay away from Salad Cream, it's revolting as is Miracle Whip.

I'm a fan of dijon mustard in my sandwich. That's pretty much all I use.

You could simply put butter, I guess.

Salad dressing works well, like ranch or thousand island or even italian (my favorite).

I dislike mayonaise in most instances and have never employed its use upon sandwiches.

I have used mayo in my sandwiches, but that's more due to my wife than anything else.

Growing up, my parents never bought mayo. The closest thing we had in the house was dijonaise and that occured in the mid 90s.

Sorry, there is no substitute for mayonnaise on sandwiches -- either that or Miracle Whip. Mustard and mayo are the two things my sandwiches must have on them.

I grew up more on generic Miracle Whip but I have grown to prefer mayonnaise. I can't understand people not liking it... at least on a meat sandwich. It's not much good for anything else.

Note: The generic Miracle Whip that I grew up with is also labeled as "Salad Dressing" and that is another way we used it. I didn't have the staple of Ranch Dressing when growing up.

Yeah.. could you tell the utter conviction I was using?

Butter is a cooking implement for italians. It's rarely used at all (ok toast, but if you care to look, toast is an americanization. So the use of butter came with it).

I like the store brand "Salad Dressing: Lite (or whipped, or whipped lite)", if I have Tobasco. The sweetness of the Salad dressing with the Tobasco spice is great. Especially with sharp cheddar cheese.
