Have any of our resident wine afficianados read this book? I've recommended it a couple of times to people who were buying gifts for wine lovers and they've all acted really excited by it.

Judgment of Paris: California vs. France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting That Revolutionized Wine (http://www.amazon.com/Judgment-Paris-California-Historic-Revolutionized/dp/0743247515)

Everytime I shelve it at work I think it looks really interesting, but I always put it back because I don't think I'll fully grasp the story, not knowing anything about wine.

i've heard of the event--tasters actually preferred a california wine over french wine, which was up until that time unprecedented. it sparked massive growth in the california wine industry as the vaunted french wines failed to take top honors.

it's the wine world equivalent of david argall saying "i was wrong".

I know the premise, and I had heard about the event before. I'm just wondering if you think I actually need to know something about wines, French or Californian, in order to appreciate/understand the book. I don't want to buy it and then get a couple of chapters in and realize that I just don't get it.
