Quite a few of us around here refer to well-known chefs with a good deal of familiarity, so I was curious as to which ones we'd each consider our favorites.
Edit: I realize this is a bit of a short list, but I'm just pulling off the top of my head, so please list any others that apply.

You forgot the, "I don't have cable, you insensitive clod!" option. :D
I'm not picky about TV chefs, as long as I'd be interested in eating what they're cooking.
I like the CIA cooking show, but they're not really celebs.

You forgot "my mother is the bestest cook" option you insensitive clod. ;)
Not often well known outside of the family, but she has a good reputation and worthy of respect.
Other than that, I'm not really familiar with any of the cooks. I know Emeril more from his commercials than his work.

Don't you people have the Food Network? :confused2:Yeah, but I rarely watch it. Usually just Rachel Ray and that's only when nothing better is on.

right now, i'm thinking chen kenichi--his plating and affability make him a fantastically appealing option.
i'm not generally a big fan of bobby flay (i think he's arrogant, even by chef standards), but his creations on ICA look incredible.
my fondness for rachael ray is of a sexual rather than culinary nature.
i'm very interested by mario's culinary excursions out of italy, esp his recent moroccan interest. and his food always looks amazing.
and of course, morimoto fascinates me, b/c i know he's a culinary globalist.
i can't pick!

He didn't ask for a favorite ed, just prefered.
Bobby Flay can die in a fire. A horrible fire that somehow involved rusty razors blades, lemon juice, a pack of flesh eating slugs, and a 2,000 gallon vat of itching creme. That would be ideal.
Paula Dean is a goddess. I would worship her if I knew where the local Church of Butter is located. Plus, when you see the opening credits of her show and they show old family photos, holy cow! She was smokin' hot when she was young! And she can cook like that!??! Seriously, she is the perfect woman. Her husband is a dirty scumbag who doesn't know how lucky he is. Well, actually he may be a nice guy, I dunno. But I hate him for having her.
I pinged a few others I like too. Emeril, Mario, and all of the old school Iron Chefs. Oh, and Puck seems like a nice guy.

I have a great deal of respect for Bourdain as a chef, an author, and a travel journalist. He ranks as my hands down favorite if we're talking fan-boy preferences.
Mario Batali can cook for me anytime. He can even wear those ugly orange crocs while he does it. I wouldn't complain. His show is great because it's so no-nonsense and really manages to capture the essence of simplicity inherent in Italian cooking without sacrificing its integrity.
Giada serves as eye-candy. That she is a decent cook is an added benefit. I could watch her daintily chop garlic all day.
Alton Brown is my favorite food nerd. Most of his recipes do not appeal to me, but his program (not to mention his features on Iron Chef America) is full of interesting information.
My feelings are neutral with regard to most of the others; except Bobby Flay (for the same reasons articulated by others) and Rachael Ray. She's the most annoying excuse for a culinary entity ever to be graced with air time. She and Bobby Flay could drop kick one another off of their NYC penthouse rooftops and the world would be a better place for it.

bah, rachael's got it all over giada in looks, plus she isn't quite as artificial-looking as giada, who still isn't anywhere near as pretty as her mother.

I think this harkens back to our longstanding disagreement about whether "Cute" or "Sexy" is more attractive. And for the record, you're just plain wrong.

bah!
by anyone's standard, giada's mom is still better looking. all giada's got is a half-mile smile and stupidly-large breasts; her mother, by contrast, can walk into a room and by so doing, command complete silence.
OK, do we at least agree about nigella lawson?

Veronica De Laurentiis has nothing on her daughter. Her mother, however...wow.
And at least Giada has breasts. Mine are bigger than Rachael's...

Nope. But I'll grant you that she's better looking than Rachael Ray.

I can't stand looking at the cover of Giada's cookbook. I think somebody needs to sew her mouth shut. And the angle of the shot makes her head look way out of proportion to the rest of her body, like a bobble head doll.

I haven't seen her show but just going by the cover of that book I have to say a cook that weighs 96 lbs is not generally considered a good thing. :D
I never watch the Food Network, but I do get stuck shelving all their cookbooks everyday.

Can we include former/deceased stars of cooking shows?
For example, Julia Child was famous for her cooking show for decades without needing to be represented as a sexy or cute woman.

I'm not really familiar with Giada de Laurentis, but that's just kinda messed up. Skinny people aren't any more likely to have eating disorders than not-skinny people are. That is such a stereotype.
My wife is petite and she doesn't have an eating disorder.

My grandmother was once the Executive Chef for the State Department, does that make her a celebrity? The Frugal Gourmet? You mean Jeff Smith? He passed away a few years ago. My mom used to like watching his show.
Nobody is saying that she has a n eating disorder because she's skinny. There was a joke made about the inherent untrustworthiness of skinny chefs, which is not uncommon and meant humourously. I made a comment agreeing with this and gave an anecdote from the show - I've seen it a few times and she does indeed often get weird look on her face when she's about to taste something and yes, it looks like she really doesn't want to eat it. I was going to say she looked like a rookie porn-actress dealing with her first money-shot, but I figured I'd spare BN's feelings and sensibilities. In the process I appear to have trampled yours; rest assured, I don't assume every skinny person I see is suffering from an eating disorder. And my quip with regards to the lady in question wasn't born of her stature, but rather her demeanour on her show. Clear?Understood, teacher.

I now watch enough Food Network (and Travel Channel for Bourdain) that I'm much more familiar with the choices in the poll.
So I actually voted. I voted for Bourdain, Brown, Morimoto, and Florence.
Heh -- I think that Florence could be Flay's brother they look so much alike.
Why so much hatred for Flay anyway? I mean, he's okay. I like watching his show Showdown with Bobby Flay.
Oh, and I would like to add to this list Guy Fieri. When I was unemployed I got hooked on watching Guy's Big Bite and then Tyler's Ultimate right afterwards.

I actually like Bobby Flay. I really like his Grill it with Bobby Flay show where just regular people come on the show and swap grilling recipes with him. I also like Showdown with Bobby Flay. It's actually fun to watch. Although, I think I like the shows where he loses the showdown more than I do the one where he wins (most of the time).
Guy Fieri is another of my favorites. I like his "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" show where he travels to various locations and introduces viewers to the food being offered at some of the best dives in state. Guy's Big Bite is really good too.
And because Paula Deen is a Southern Gal, I really like her show.
I like Rachel Ray's show because I like the way she takes really simple approaches to dishes.
I'm not a fan of Giada, neither her cuisine or her looks appeal to me. (I think she's horsey looking.)
And I love Bourdain's shows and his books. I'm actually re-reading The Nasty Bits right now.
