For the medieval gamer foodie in all of us, I found this article in Wikipedia about medieval cuisine. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_cuisine)
Interesting read. I'm always looking for tips and ideas on making my gameworld more believable.

When I was in Germany one of the people I stayed with who was a huge medieval reenactor gave me a recipe for an awesome medieval bean soup. I'll see if I can find it.

If you go to the SCA (http://www.sca.org) website, you can get a copy of their Known World Handbook ($16) which has a lot of detail you'll like, including recipes.
Check this site (http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/food.html) out for recipes.

Those are really cool Hitcher! I especially like the second link.

You know, I've tried the types of medieval food available to peasants and yeomen.
(Because I'm stupid and curious. Emphasis on stupid. There's a reason most people don't eat millet or mashed turnips anymore.)
I wouldn't encourage it. Go to your local grocery store, fall to your knees, and give thanks for progress.

Emphasis mine.
You apparently never spoke with my mother.
At least it was blended with potatoes and carrots. I don't mind a little turnip, but it will never be one of my favorite veggies.
About the millet, it's probably the reason it got relegated to birdseeds, no one else would eat it. It's only a matter of time until the parakeets wise up and rise up.

Out of curiousity, why the interest in what the commoners ate?
Of the things Id have thought it would be interesting to experience life as, a medieval commoner has never been one of them

Because most people were commoners. <shrug> What the top 1% ate on special occassions isn't very useful for stories or games.
Why ed, tradition is to eat the best food you can. <grin> Which is why most Koreans I've met avoid kimchee like the plague.

Hmmm. For stories Ill admit Im generally more interested in that top 1%, or at least, close to it. The Sir Lancelots or Roland of Gileads of the world
For RPGs I dont quite want the Sir Lancelots or Roland of Gileads, but I tend to view adventurers as being a generally well compensated and respected skilled profession, which do not eat cheap food
Though actually, Ive never actually tried to figure out what exactly they ate, just that presumably it was professional class food. Oops

Kimchi is very tasty if you can actually find good forms of it
Sadly, the forms from WalMart are while still tasty, not very tasty
In pre college times it was one of the very few vegetables Id eat

Hmm. I've never tried Medieval cuisine or kimchi.
Just sayin'.

Some mediaeval cuisine is very nice, though some are definetly an acquired taste...
