I fast-forwarded through Demetrious's collapse because I didn't think it would be that interesting for anyone for us to rehash it, except possibly Francois. The things that are going to be most interesting to Gwynnis et al. are the attacks at Drake Manor (both nights that they occurred), scouting around for a meeting place and the attack at MLK Elementary, and Jocelin's outburst at Heather. You can fit in the thing with Sarah's die at some point, too, when events in the interview get closer to when that actually happened.

No worries, I'm sure Hux either is or just was in the same boat. I've got an idea for a vignette covering Gwynnis's portentous arrival to New Orleans that I can work on if there's some down time.

Having never done PbP before, how does the real time delay between the Justicar's question and answer get represented in game time? Obviously we didn't sit there in awkward silence for days, but is there a delay as the charecters formulate thoughts, etc?

Actually it sounds like a great name for a Techno band or something. Perhaps opening for My Chemical Romance.

Time moves at the speed of context and/or direct fiat in Play By. I was in a ame for six years. We advanced in character five days.

Asking the GM helps. You will note Det has resorted to putting the date up in the main threads.

Yeah, basically this. The conversation will be considered to take place at the pace of a normal conversation. Eventually, Vampire #26 will enter the scene, too, and in my mind's eye that's going to take place in about 15-30 minutes of in-game time.

It actually has the potential of being a really awesome class. I just didn't particularly enjoy the way it was taught. Either way, that final is finished, and as soon as I finish up with my Organic one this afternoon, I'll be posting this evening.

Nice. Congrats (slightly in advance) on making it to the end of another Finals Week.

I'm going to be driving up to Pasadena tonight, but I should have the chance to look in on things both before and after my drive.

What is everyone's availability over the holidays? I'm going to be around pretty much all the time between now and New Year's, so I can continue the game as needed. If others are going to be gone, however, we can go on holiday hiatus.

Cool, if Kal and SD are going to be around at least some of the time in the next week and a half, we should be able to carry this interview session forward to where we can get BB's character more actively involved. If not, no biggie, we can pause either on Jack's testimony or the questioning that will surely arise when we get to Jocelin's outburst at Heather.

I'm likely unavailabel from Noon tommorow until Sunday evening. That said, Francois is going to sit there making appropriate faces and not interjecting in stuff he knows nothing about, so carry on as need be. If any passive rolls need to be made, feel free to make them.

Heh, nice.

I've been doing some work for my F2F game, which has come back to life some during the Winter Break here at UCSD. Some of that stuff might come in handy for this game, too. If the post-Arcadian's death sessions in the F2F game are any indication, there's going to be a LOT of action after the meeting with Gwynnis et al. Hang on to your hats.

FYI, I'm going to be heading to the field next weekend, driving out to NM on the 4th and then there for at least two weeks before driving back. I will be busy right at the start and then the last week or so of the deployment, so I may pay spotty attention to the game during those times/

Detritus

OK, perhaps in part because it's the holidays, I am not sensing a great deal of enthusiasm for continuing/completing the interview portion of the audience with Gwynnis. This is fine; honestly, there is bigger and better out there even later tonight in terms of what will happen in the game, and to be perfectly frank, it's most likely going to take months of IRL time to get to the end of the interview given the pace of interaction between players and GM. From the Camarilla POV, Gwynnis et al. will want to go over both the incident at Jackson high between Jocelin and Heather and the episode at Drake Manor with a fine-tooth comb, and that means a lot of talking.

If you guys want to fast-forward through this stuff, let me know. I can summarize what happens just as easily as us having to play through this stuff, although you'll be giving up the ability to help direct where the conversation goes and what exactly you'll be talking about in that case. They'll be some censure for both PCs and NPCs, but nothing too lasting, to give you the one-sentence sneak preview.

Well, as far as my character is concerned, he's going to be forthcoming throughout the entire interview. (And, actually, this last question I didn't realize was directed more towards me until I looked at the Plot thread)

Alternatively, we might be able to set up a time where we're all on for an hour.

EDIT: Realized that may not be clear. I'm fine with fast-forwarding, but I'm not planning on hiding anything, and I don't think it's my character that's really at stake here.

Kal, SD, any opinions about continuing with the interview or fast-forwarding through it?

Im okay with fast forward, Jocelin is probably getting in trouble no matter what

Detritus
01-05-2009, 04:24 PM
OK, fast forward it is. I have just gotten set up in New Mexico after a drive to Pasadena on Saturday, and then a drive from Pasadena to Las Cruces, NM yesterday.

A slightly longer summary of what will happen:

Jocelin gets a fairly serious scolding for losing her cool. Gwynnis will reaffirm Leo's pronouncement on her penance.

Minor scoldings to Leo for putting Jocelin out there in the first place, and to Jack for leaving Samantha's house without taking anyone good at Auspex with him.

Anneke also gets a bit of what-for for not realizing that Black Cat was Sabbat despite traveling east with her from LA.

I'll resume the in-character thread either later tonight or tomorrow.

Detritus
01-06-2009, 09:35 PM
OK, the interview fast-forward post is up. There will be a period of loosely structured interaction between the Kindred left in Jack's recovery room while Gwynnis et al. are out of the room. Whatever conversation you wish to strike up, please feel free, and if you are ambulatory, and wish for some privacy, you can try finding another room, too. It's a big house.

Synopses of the incident at Jackson High and the immediate aftermath can be found in the final two posts of this thread:

http://forum.criticalfumble.net/showthread.php?t=11789

There are links to the original threads, too. And the Drake Manor/Appendix A threads are relevant here, of course, but I've been lazy and haven't synopsized them yet.

Detritus
01-06-2009, 11:11 PM
I'm going to do something a little different with the next several posts of the Setting Pieces thread, basically a longer story covering a time period when two major NPCs (Rebekka and Anneke) were much less sure of their footing in the Kindred world. Essentially, it'll play out as a coming of age story, but with vampires. I've only written the first part, but have a rough plot outline in my head, to be visited when there are slow times in the game (and when I'm not on the clock).

No, not really. In fact, I kind of shot my wad with this naming convention, I was originally saving it for a cutaway post to an episode of the main antagonist Sabbat pack's rite of Vaulderie, which would have been titled something like "8 Vampires, 1 Cup." I guess there's still time for that...

Detritus

Regarding the proposed ritual for establishing everyone's lineage, if you don't want your PC to have to take part in it, just give me a name for your Sire. If you haven't yet established an approximate time when you were Embraced, you can give me that, too, although I think the only PC that might possibly be relevant for is Jocelin.

Huh, well, normally Id let the DM make it up, but Id assume Jocelin would know who it is (since would be an outlier and oddity worth writing into her story if she didnt), so Ill make up a name

Tycho (whether or not thats his/her real name is up to you, but is just about the coolest name for a Brujah to have, considering the famous figure definitely must have been a Brujah (well, unless sourcebooks dispute that) and certainly is the proper sort of warrior philosopher for folks to admire), so I think its a name one would pick for themselves since vampires are like forum users and pick new names for themselves frequently)

OK, that's fine. If Jocelin needs to introduce herself in the future, she probably should append the phrase "childe of Tycho" to her normal self-introduction. That's the sort of thing that elders (like your new Prince) pick up on when it's missing.

OK, sounds like Jack is the only PC who doesn't know the identity of his Sire. It'll probably be a few days of in-game time before it happens, since it requires some of the subject's blood (1 Blood Point), and Jack is still recovering from his wounds.

Otherwise the PCs are free for the moment to mingle as they see fit, as I stated in the active IC thread.

Detritus

I'm going to be splitting things up into individual threads soon. Sneak preview of what I have in mind:

Bonnie will give François the opportunity to speak with her alone.

Rebekka will send Sarah and Jocelin off together to play with fire.

Jürgen will ask Jack to contact anyone he might know who would know the whereabouts of Simms.

Anneke will speak with Leo about any possible leads he might be able to turn up. She may also have some words of wisdom concerning her sister.

For the purposes of the search for Sylvester Simms, this will be an opportunity for Jack and Leo to flesh out their backgrounds a bit more. SD and Hux should feel free to make up a name or two who would be contact-level associates who may have some inkling on how to track down Simms. The PCs have both been around long enough to have such associates who wouldn't necessarily rise to full-fledged Contact or Ally status in their pasts.

I saw in another thread that Boston is apparently in Camarilla Control. It's been a few years, but had thought NE was Sabbat stronghold.

Anyway, in this world, what are the main Sabbat / Camirilla areas?
Sabbat - Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal

Contested Camarilla/Sabbat - New York, Atlanta, St. Louis, El Paso, Miami

Anarch - LA, San Diego

Contested Camarilla/Anarch - Oakland

Camarilla - Washington DC, Boston, New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco, S. Florida other than Miami

The listed Camarilla cities are vulnerable, but still in Camarilla hands. You can assume any other major US city not listed is more firmly in Camarilla control than the listed ones.

I'll get to the IC thread in a bit, but I'm just about to head home right now.

I don't really have much planned for the Jocelin and Jack threads beyond what has already happened. Jack can keep giving suggestions, and I'll have the Gangrel with him react as appropriate. Sarah might return to the kitchen with Jocelin and Antoinette, we'll see.

There are still several rounds of replies in the Francois thread, which is about to become the Francois/Leo thread. I have the reactions of all the major NPCs worked out in broad terms, but I want to give the scene some room to play out.

EDIT -- I'll also say, if François got ticked just at a enumeration of other Sabbat practices, he's going to get really PO'ed when the question arises as to whether he's partaken of The Vaulderie before, so keep that dice roller handy. ;)

In OOC news: All the players should think about whether their PCs would be willing to bind themselves into The Vinculum, which is the group blood bond that the Sabbat uses to enforce pack and sect loyalty. This is the issue that's up for discussion in the Francois thread. It should be a surprise for the PCs, but the players can think about it ahead of time. It's kind of a big decision.

Okily dokily.

In other OOC news, while everyone is thinking about whether their PCs would be willing to submit themselves to The Vinculum, I will say that it's a 10-point disadvantage. I'd be willing to make up the deficit with other fun stuff for your characters, however. Something else to consider in a meta-game sort of way.

Fly is both faster than levitate and Lets the subject of it direct him or herself. Levitate and Apportatin requrei the cater to concentrate in order to move/change direction of the subject.

So yes, it can be cast on anyone near enough to the caster to beat distance penalties.

Humor me: Define 'Viniculum'. Can't find it in the G:VtM book.
It's in the GURPS V:tM Companion. It's the group blood bond practiced by nomadic Sabbat packs or all those Sabbat vampires in a given city. The interactions are kind of complicated, but essentially anyone under The Vinculum has a "Vinculum Rating" with respect to all others who share the bond. In certain situations, you will be compelled to act in ways that you might think are wrong, rash, etc. if you fail a Vinculum roll, if the vamp doing the foolhardy thing is part of your Vinculum. There can be modifiers for Vinculum rolls if the action would be really out of character.

My Companion book took flood damage. Jack will try to avoid that if he can. Gangrel tend to be free ranged sorts.

The easiest way to think of it is as a watered down blood bond. It makes you loyal to each other, and if renewed fiercely loyal to each other. (Although (and Francois doesn't know this) the more in it, the weaker the bond tends to be, at least in the White Wolf source material.

It has pluses and minuses. Your friends are compelled not to leave you hanging, and in a cut throat "every kindred for themesleves" environment, that is worth some piece of mind.

That said, if you'd resist a blood bond, you'd likely resist this too.

Detritus
02-07-2009, 01:21 AM
The other thing is that if it gets too big, you can run into problems of the sort where you have all these predators tied to each other in blood, yet they're still predators. The internecine warfare that is the hallmark of life in the Camarilla gets turned outward. This can also be true with smaller packs of vamps if it turns out that you think one or more of your Vinculum mates is an irredeemable asshole. These will be some of the themes explored in the next few posts in the François/Leo thread, at such time as I get around to posting them.

This can also be true with smaller packs of vamps if it turns out that you think one or more of your Vinculum mates is an irredeemable asshole. These will be some of the themes explored in the next few posts in the François/Leo thread, at such time as I get around to posting them.

Well yeah, OOC trying to do it with an eintire domain is so crazy even the Sabbat don't do it. Francois doesn't know that though. He's seing it as a shortcut to "All for One, One For All", and on a surface extent it will do that.

Yeah, that's fine, I figured as much, but for those who haven't thought about Sabbat philosophy that much, it's reasonable to give them a little background info.

I'll be posting replies some time tonight. Life intervened yesterday and this morning/afternoon. Be advised that there's probably going to be a long dialog between Anneke, Gwynnis, and Rebekka in the François/Leo thread, maybe split up into multiple posts, before the PCs need to respond, and that (hopefully) there won't be that many replies needed to wrap things up in the discussion concerning The Vinculum.

I think the Playing With Fire/Where In the World threads are about done, although Francois and/or Leo may still have some lingering questions. After that will be the briefing, and then patrolling, although that probably won't be until tomorrow night in in-game time.

Fire's pretty scary shit. Small, like a candle.

If anyone wants to add anything before Jocelin starts playing with fire once again, now is the time to do it. I'm going to be staying up late and sleeping in as late as possible since I am on recovery duty for the rocket payload. The launch is scheduled for 0330 and recovery for three hours after that, so no sleep time tomorrow night. I'll deal with whatever's on tap when I wake up tomorrow.

Can you give me an Overconfidence roll, and a Self-Control roll? If you make your Overconfidence roll, you can spend a blood to raise your effective Self-Control by 2. The roll to snuff the candle will be at your effective S-C minus 1.

Let me remind myself of the people that the PCs expect to hear back from "tomorrow night".

Leo - Has two Nossie contacts.

Francois - Expects to hear from Charles shortly after sunset.

Jack - Might be hearing back either from Lydia in Dallas or someone who might know Simms from Boston.

Is there anything I'm missing here?

I updated Jack and Leo's character sheets to reflect CP spent. François and Jocelin were already up-to-date. At some point I may post character sheets for all the PCs in the format that I'm accustomed to. I'll leave the originals up, but just going through and seeing four different formats for the PCs made my eyes cross a little bit.

I couldn't work out what Jack's effective skill levels were for his Animalism powers from the notes in his character thread, so I spent some time last night to work out a re-formatted version of his character sheet, which I've just posted. I need to head to campus, but I should be able to respond to what everyone's posted in the active IC thread some time during the day (West Coast hours).

Detritus

I just posted a re-formatted version of Leo's character sheet. The distribution of points is a bit different than in the original write-up, but it is basically the same either way. Details:

-10 of the Hideous Appearance disadvantage should not count against the -40 point limit because that's a clan disad. Also, I rearranged some points between Leo's Obfuscate disciplines and his Stealth skill. In essence, there were too many points in Obfuscate for the listed skill levels, and too few in Stealth (it can *default* to either DX or IQ, but it's bought up against DX only).

I did end up with 10 points left over after all this, which I used to raise Leo's wealth from Dead Broke [-25] to Poor [-15]. We'll say that Arcadian left Leo a small inheritance, blessedly unaffected by any inheritance tax, that was the source of the infusion of cash.

Also, I need a specific type of Mechanic skill -- gas engine, clockwork & small gadgets, etc.

The Lafayette Cemeteries thread will be a wrap once Jack and Leo have committed to contributing to the bowl o' blood or not.

I guess between sword, pistol, and flak jacket Jocelin already fairly bristles with weapons. Hypothetically speaking, a few grenades might be handy should you be confronted with hordes of Reavers Sabbat mooks.

Kalzazz

I dont think to the Brujah mindset that '2 weapons and light concealable body armor' reaches the 'bristles' level

Whats tossing a grenade default to?

I was thinking perhaps a nice deer rifle could be useful if the Sabbat induced us into a fight at range, though has the drawback of needing to be left in vehicle when blending in is required since rifle defaults to pistol -2, so 16, which isnt to implausible to score a hit with

Detritus
05-01-2009, 02:32 AM
A deer rifle is OK.

Grenades would fall under Thrown Weapon (Grenade), which is a P/E skill. For Jocelin specifically, she can use her Softball skill as a substitute.

I think Francois being rich and a musketeer needs a Barret .50 sniper rifle, as musketeers had super coolness where they got cool guns (their lackeys had uncool guns), and at the defense of the fort at lunch blasted people with great accuracy from far away

I was thinking that, but a sniper rifle keeps me too far from the action; an assault rifle will be much more useful I think.

Desert Eagles should be pretty easily attainable, although I'll have to invent stats for them, since GURPS only goes up to the Eagle .44. An M4 is probably going to have to come from Jackson Barracks, although I'll double check what sort of arms dealer contacts I've given Uma. She might be able to get you one herself. Do you want an M4 variant with full auto capability?

Also, to make your life easier, Eagle .44s will be fine as well.

What does the "7 + 1" mean in that entry? Also, I'm assuming the "bulk" is the recoil penalty of the weapon?

Kalzazz
05-01-2009, 05:00 PM
7+1 means it holds 7 rounds in magazine, 1 in chamber

Recoil penalty is 4

Bulk is a measure of bulk, it is -4 to holdout checks (being huge)

However, I realize now that 4e stats and 3e stats hold, at best, a passing acquaintance with each other, so Ill check my 3e books when I get home

Recoil changed a LOT in 4th however. It's an increment, not a penalty to the roll. When fired at RoF 2+ use the RCl value to determine how many shots hit. RCl four means every 4 levels you rolled below your final to hit score means another shot. ie Skill 17, reduced to 13 for range, roll of 8. Hit with the 13, hit again with a 9. The next would be five and hyou didn't roll that well. Two hits.

Just for the record, modern Firepower gives each of the auto pistols listed a RCl of -1. This is from the H&K P11 to the S&W .40 to the O'Dwyre VLE 9mm ELP.

(At present, almost all of my 3rd edition stuff is not accessible.)

-2 RCL for it tops. -1 probably.

Well, the .44M Desert Eagle in the 3e core book has 3 recoil, so, the .50 version wouldnt have less

Detritus
05-01-2009, 08:30 PM
Based on the 3e GURPS Eagle .44 and Kal's info from 4e GURPS I'm willing to give the Desert Eagle the following stats:

.50 AE Desert Eagle: 4d cr, 7 Shots (8 if you use .44 shells, 9 for .38 shells, but damage drops accordingly), Acc 2, Recoil 4, 220/2500 range, -3 to Holdout skill (-4 seems a touch high to me)

Also, the 1/2 D range for the M4 will be 250 yards (instead of 500 AS for the M16), and RoF will be 3 for a burst or semi-automatic fire (instead of the 12 for full auto for the M16). Everything else is the same for the two weapons.

I'll play the availability of WP grenades by ear. There's a good possibility that they are available but considerably more expensive from a guy like Al, which may intersect with Jack's Miserliness.

Did Jocelin have a job in Dallas before this started? If so, a paycheck is negotiable. I think Jack would have gotten a paycheck on the 1st from his security gig.
