Okay, I use charcoal. I used to use gas, but I couldn't control the heat very well.
Last year, I started buying "real" charcoal instead of briquettes. I like it much better.
Yes, I can cook over a wood fire, too.
Of course, my current grill is a gas grill converted to use charcoal by virtue of having a cake pan inserted in it. I hope to correct that this year.
I usually grill at least once over the winter, but I haven't this year. I hope to this weekend, though.

The rare few times I do grill stuf it is with charcoal, but I am not much for grilling. Och I love eating the result if it is doen well, just don't like doing it.
Not even sure if I have seen a gas-grill here in Sweden.

/MagnusReally? Because they're dirt-common here in the US.
People like them because people are impatient.

I've never tried wood before but the charcoal briquettes you buy in the store leave everything tasting like lighter fluid. Besides I like the controll I get with gas.

Wood is the best. You get that wonderful smokey flavor.

Gas for home, firepit while camping. Firepit while at my parent's cottage.
In otherwords: firepit if I have the choice, I don't have that choice very often.
I believe there's some bylaw against wood burning around here. Not sure.
I like the taste of wood better than gas on the meat, definetly.
Mouser: compensating much?

I use mesquite briquettes (http://www.epinions.com/Appliance_Accessories-Char-Broil_Mesquite_Flavor_Ceramic_Briquettes_4184775)i n the bottom of my grill. Obviosly not the same but I do get some of the smoky flavor from them.

Gas. Charcoal is inconvenient and makes horrible sounds as it interacts with itself and the grill

I prefer wood. But I ussually just use charcoal. But that's close to wood, I just succumb to using lighter fluid when using charcoal. I taste a difference between charcoal and gas: Gas, to me, tastes like your stove top. Charcoal gives the meat a good flavor.
Like it's been grilled, or something.

I don't if it's a preference, but we've been using gas for years now.
We used to own a small charcoal BBQ, but it would always take a long time to light and always be a mess to clean out. Gas grills became cheaper and more available so we followed the crowd and remained with it ever since.
I've become pretty adept with it over the years.
