Should we do it? How finely-grained should the divisions be?

Hitcher

Base genre I think is fine. Fantasy, Modern, Historical, Superhero, Science Fiction.

I wouldnt mind seeing a V&V and D&D spot...

hidufel, what utility does ruleset-specific serve? who's gonna talk about supers games here that isn't talking V&V? sure, maybe there'll be some M&M discussion, but the overlap b/n the systems is so high as to make the division not terribly meaningful, IMHO.

i agree w/ hitcher that genre-specific subdivisions make the most sense, if at all. heck, if we just title new threads appropriately, it won't make much difference, will it?

Prolly not... theres champions, dont forget. But you are right i suppose. The supers genre could really cover it, and V&V is covered at the other boards.

i don't think anybody migrating over is prone to playing champs, hidufel.

one would hope so! CHamps is ok, but i dont prefer it. I think Dr. Merc likes it though.

I think that going the genre route is better at first.

If, later, there's a specific system that will hog the spot light, then it can get it's own.. yes?

hidufel

That would work, and i think is the prevailing opinion...

oh and ed... Im not disagreeing with you, I am agreeing... champs is teh suxxor. (compared to the systems i prefer)

<raises hand>

I've even got all my source material for that SW game I want to do. I just need to play through KOTR2 again to make sure of the personalities I want to use.

I'd be afraid that if roleplaying discussion gets too divided, it will turn into RPGHost all over again - dead forums as far as the eye can see.

Sub forums for actual roleplaying, on the other hand, would serve a good purpose.

Right now, I'd say make a general roleplaying forum until trends emerge, and have forum topic titles of the sort listed here. Too much fragmentation will cause a lower traffic flow and less interest rather than more.

With all of those sub-forums, how many of them would actually get used?

Exactly. If this forum takes off and gets hundreds of members, then we can see what comes of it.

good thinking. best to keep it nice and neat less it grow to such proportions as to be encumbered by dross.

better a small number of robust forums than what we wound up seeing over on RPGhost.

Precicely. I think that turned away a lot of potential users who thought the forums were all dead.

I think the wait-and-see approach might be best for now. We still don't know how much traffic we're going to get, so no reason to do anything too soon.

I said something like that on another thread.

If one game or system gets so much traffic that it monopolizes the RPG forum, I will split off a new forum for it. Otherwise, it's just a dilution of traffic and interest.

Origen

As a matter of fact, this forum has already seen more traffic than the D&D 3rd Edition forum has seen in a long time, because there are more people with more diverse interests than simply D&D.

I agree with Origen and others. Less forums. If a topic or genre gets so big that it starts to overshadow the forum then it can be splintered off into its own forum. The reason I stopped going anywhere other than GE&R is because everywhere else was a ghost town and I don't play D&D. So, even though the D&D forum probably had some great threads in it, I didn't want to sift through 30 rules threads to find one that I would be interested in.

Yeah. I subscribed to several other RPG forums over there, if only to see if anyone would ever post on them.

The only change I'd make at the moment is to split it between board games (including card games), RPGs, and computer and console games.
