So, what are you all reading now and what is in your reading pile for Christmas?
I am reading Laughing Boy's Shadow, which is grim and wonderful, by Steve Savile.
I am also looking forward ot getting stuck into Necropolis and David Gemmell's Legend which I have ever read.

I'm sort of reading the Lord of the Isles series by David Drake. Overall, while I liked the first two books, I'm finding the third rather meh. Before that, I read his Belisarius series, and looked up some of the actual history surrounding Belisarius and Justinian with the idea of possibly using it in my Trans-Dimensional campaign I run with the Ho3G.

Just finished "23 Hours", David Wellington's latest book in the series that started with "13 Bullets". The series then progressed to "99 Coffins" and "Vampire Zero". I have to say, as much as I loved "13 Bullets" as a refreshingly different take on vampires, one in which they are truly monsters, I'm becoming disappointed. "13 Bullets" was pure awesome. "99 Coffins" was pretty good, but definitely coasted somewhat on the coolness of its predecessor. "Vampire Zero" should have been the last book and it could have wrapped up nicely there. "23 Hours" has a killer premise and actually promised to wrap things up in style, but ultimately, for me, failed to deliver. I had some quibbles with Wellington's portrayal of martial arts in the story (something that likely won't be a deal-breaker for many -- just a bit of inauthenticity that rankled me a bit), but the real sin is that the book has no resolution. It just sets up another book. Meh. I'm done with it, methinks. I can't recommend "13 Bullets" highly enough, but I have to say, I don't think the succeeding books live up to the first. I think that the model established by the first just isn't sustainable, with the remaining books basically being progressively less exciting, less frightening iterations of the first.
I'm also reading "The Strain", by Guillermo Del Toro (yes, that dude!!) and Chuck Hogan. This is another vampire book, running more off of a disease model, drawing a lot from ideas and theme's that Del Toro established in "Blade 2". It's not bad -- no sexy, seductive vampires (yay!), but somehow, it seems more like explication than entertainment. The authors are saying "Look at my cool idea!" (and to be fair, the ideas are pretty cool), rather than using cool ideas to evoke and provoke. This is definitely a case of too much telling and not enough showing. Not bad, but not great either.

Reading The Black Company book II of The Books of The south Dreams of steel.... I've read seven or eight of the Black Company series. The tone doesn't change much, but the characters and the focus change really, really quickly as you go on. The first three stick together somewhat, I think, since they're all part of the same "campaign."
That said, I love some of the badguys' descriptions.

I finished it a while ago, but forgot about this post.
It was pretty good, although I had a little trouble getting into the story. Part of that was that I got really busy right when I started reading the book, so there were several nights in a row where I fell asleep after a few paragraphs or a couple of pages, part of it was trying to turn off the part of my brain that now almost automatically associates descriptions of vampires in action with game mechanics, and part because I felt the story didn't really pick up until Claudia arrived on the scene. The last two-thirds or three-quarters of the book is pretty good, once Lestat becomes less of a central figure in the narrative.

I did know about the dyslexia. And the coolness. There was a pre-signing get-together at McMenamins where much hilarity ensued. Brent & Kristi Weeks were there and a handful of fans. Blake shared a story about the first time that he met Brent. Then Brent told us his version of the meeting. If I recall correctly all the people in the two tellings were the same but that was it.

They're not going to change your life with deep, penetrating insights into the human condition, but they're entertaining books and worth reading. Mistress of the Art of Death wasn't too bad. It was a bit predictable in places, but it was interesting to see how the author wove these very complex worldviews about religion--Christianity, Judaism, women, medicine--into a pretty tightly written novel.
I finished my re-read of Animal Farm and finished The School of Essential Ingredients by Bauermeister. The Bauermeister book was okay--definitely a quick read, but a bit too idyllic in places.

In the last ten days, I've read Freehold by Michael Williamson, Saphhire Road by Wynne Whiteford, Gabriel's Ghost by Linnea Sinclair and today reread Dark Piper by Andre Norton. Next on my reading pile is Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore and Enchantress of the Stars by Sylvia Engdahl.
I'm reading Enchantress of the Stars because I'm looking for a young-adult book a friend told me about years ago. It's about a genetically engineered girl (called an "evo-stepper") who gets sent out to a terra-forming project, only gets caught sabotaging it (she discovered intelligent life (in the oceans?) but nobody wants to believe her). As they can't send her back, they decide to maroon her on a nearby world the terra-formers rejected as it has primitive intelligent biped life on it.
After several internet searches came up empty, I asked a few scifi boards and this was one of the suggestions. I already know Enchantress of the Stars is not the book I'm looking for. I'm beginning to think the only way I'll find out the title is by writing my own version and seeing who sues me.

I read the first two books in the Sector Hospital series by James White. Old-style sci-fi, think ER with aliens (who aren't all humanoid in apperance, or even tolerance). Not great writing, but the aliens are interesting, as is how three dozen different intelligent races with mostly different atmosphere and gravity requirements handle all working and treating each others cases.
I set aside the rest of it to finally get to reading Zelazny's Lord of Light. I took a quick jaunt through the Amber short stories first (and damn, why did he have to die before turning those into another five book set). Lord of Light is interesting, I know almost nothing about India's mythology into Buddism and Hinduism, so I'm not sure how much he's derivating from the original material.

Finished the second and third book. They make for an interesting trilogy overall, shifting from mystery to thriller to legal procedural as the story unfolds. The focus of Played with Fire is much better, in my opinion, than the first. I'd rate it as the best of the three with a very strong story and unfolding mystery. While I liked most of Kicked the Hornet's Nest, it suffered from a bit of rush at the end, somewhat hurried with less resolution than I would have liked. I found the political side and court drama laess compelling than the straight out thriller / mystery of the first two volumes with some draggy bits during the transition. Still worth a read. There's a lot in this trilogy to discuss, beyond the scope of this thread. At some point, I may start a discussion on the GE&R boards to poke around at some of the ideas Larsson deals with. I'm also interested in seeing the movies (the Swedish versions, not so keen on what Hollywood will do to the story...and the characters. I'm not sure Salandar will survive an American movie producer, heh.)
Also read Stephen King's Blaze (one of the "Bachman" novels, or so he says). It was stronger than the worst of King's writing, but not as good as his best work. Very middle of the road. I found the attempt to evoke pathos very clumsy, which is unusual for King. He's normally adept at tugging the emotions. Good voice throughout, and an homage to an American classic.
I've just started Greywalker, which I've been meaning to read for a while.

Well, okay, I'm also rereading the Dresden Files in prep for Ghost Story in two weeks. But DOWNPOUR takes priority.
Sorry mist. I know I shouldn't have. My fingers didn't check in with my brain when typing. :(
