Who is/was your favorite quarterback.

<grin> Not pulling an ed on this one. I'm fairly confident that I won't skew the results by picking Steve DeBerg.
Possibly the best play-fake in the history of football, tough as nails, and intangibles out the wazzo. (And a perpetual underdog who kept right on battling.)

I gotta go with Troy Aikmn on this one and not just because I'm a Cowboys fan (as proof my fav RB is Christian Okoye).

He had the arm strength to throw the deep ball or zip in a line drive 20 yard out.
I don't think anybody can challenge that he wasn't one of the most accurate QB's.
He didn't throw a lot of INTs
Troy didn't make stupid mistakes
and he was tough. He would sit in the pocket and make the throw even when there was a linebacker in his face and he knew he was gonna get drilled.
nobody has ever thrown a better a timing route

an argument can be made that much of his success was because of his supporting cast but Troy was just to damn efficient in my book for it to hold water.

I have a much easier time answering this for fantasy football than for real football.

Fantasy -- Steve Beuerlein. That one year he threw 36 TDs for Carolina, he was the QB for my first-ever fantasy championship. That was the same year that Kurt Warner burst on to the scene, so he's kind of the forgotten man from that year.

Real life -- Hard to say. Maybe Dan Fouts. He was the super-prolific passer in the NFL when I first started watching, before Marino arrived on to the scene. Those Chargers teams from the late '70s/early '80s were a lot of fun to watch.

Dope me out on demerol and I'll do Farve like things to. :p Not that Brett isn't a great QB tu the pain killer addiction puts a sour taste on a lot of it for me. (His repeated demoliion of my lovable loser Lions has nothing to do with it either. :p )

I think my favorite 2 to watch play were John Elway and Joe Montana. No game was over until the clock read 0:00 with those 2.

22-25 for 268 yards in a super bowl is something worth noting

i don't think that accuracy has been eclipsed yet.

Wow. Great minds... I guess.

The first two names that popped into my head when I read the initial post was, of course, Favre (my all-time fave and leader of my ever-lovin' Pack) and Phil Simms as runner up.

Simms was not only a great player, but he's uber-bright. I love watching games when he's commentating. Solid head on his shoulders, that one.

chris: i really didn't expect anyone else to mention simms, to be honest. dang, that's kinda weird...

i should note that i wasn't really watching football when montana was in SF. not really. but even when he went to KC, he would get this look in his eyes in the 4th if his team was down now and then, and you knew that drive was going to score.

An excerpt from Wiki:

Phil Simms was part of two Super Bowl championship teams. In his 14 seasons with the Giants, Simms completed 2,576 out of 4,647 passes for 33,462 yards and 199 touchdowns. He added 349 carries for 1,252 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. Simms owns many of the New York Giants passing records, along with Kerry Collins. Sports Illustrated considered him to be the "Most Underrated Quarterback in NFL History" in their August 27th, 2001 issue entitled, "The Most Overrated and Underrated".

Though I have to confess, as I mentioned in my post above, most of my respect for him is in his announcing and game coverage. Very smart and articulate. His presence in the booth tends to add to the game.

i've been fortunate enough to see a few games he's called, and i agree he's an excellent commentator. i'd like to see him behind a desk in the future, to be honest. i think very few former players have made the transition as skillfully as simms has.

as a giants fan, i have a deep appreciation for the man. :>

Having DirecTV with Sunday Ticket, I get to see a lot of games he calls. :D

True, I have a new-found love of the Chargers, stemming from my wife. It's her team, and thusly I have adopted it as a means of maintaining a peaceful home-life. ;)

My team of record is Green Bay, though. The abreviated story...

Didn't like football much as a nerdy kid. Friends and family did, however. So, back in the dark 80's (when the Pack were the worst of the worst), I would root for them as the perennial underdogs that they were. More out of jest or spite than anything. But over time, as I began to appreciate the game more, I adopted them for real. Been my team ever since.

Oh, and I'd say I hate the Raiders, but unfortunately 'hate' isn't nearly a strong enough word. ;)

I think most of my ire stems from the fan base more so than the team itself. Though I also have a distaste for their player choices, tendency towards dirty play and overall ick-factor.

But yeah, mostly it's the fans. Gawd I hate them so.

i gotta say, i generally dislike the oakland fans i've encountered.

It is oft joked about around here that if one was to go to a Raider home game, but was a fan of the visiting team, one would still wear a black-and-silver jersey and root on the Raiders. Lest they got a shiv to the spleen.

Shameful bunch in general, Raiders fans are. Bunch of thugs and hoodlums, IMNSHO. But then, maybe my perception is a just a *bit* clouded by the red goggles of hate. ;)

Well, I almost decided to take the Eagles at +7 over your beloved G-men this weekend. Garcia is starting to really click over there in Philly.

But I talked myself out of it, so I don't have to root against your boys in blue after all. ;)

ed
12-14-2006, 04:56 PM
well, garcia's gonna have to throw in the meadowlands. it isn't a place renowned for being friendly to the passing game. :>

Very true. But at +7, I almost considered it a taker.

Speaking of which, post in the other thread and give me a few of your personal "locks" for this weekend. I'd love to hear your choice picks.

Remember to consider the spread. ;)
