View Full Version : [NFL] hey pauly, how about a wager?

DAL hosts NYG sunday night, kickoff's at 8:20. it should be a good game by what most people would consider the (currently) 2 strongest teams in the division, given that the alternatives are WAS and a likely mcnabb-less PHI.
i'm feeling pretty good about the giants' chances; i'm betting you're feeling pretty good about the 'boys. but i'm thinking that whoever wins, it'll be some good football either way. so how about a friendly wager?
stakes: the loser changes his title to honor the winning team until the following sunday. i'm not big on avatars, so i don't feel obliged to include that as part of the stakes.
whaddaya say?

ah, well.
i need to do a little research: i know i don't remember the last time the giants had 2 100 yard receivers in a game. i'm not sure, given the team's history, that it's ever happened before.

I'd be surprised if it never happened with Plax and Amani while they were together.

turns out you are indeed correct: in 2006, against philadelphia.

Sept. 17, 2006 - Giants 30, Eagles 24 (OT) (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200609170phi.htm)
I only checked the games when Plax hit triple figures in yardage, but that's probably a good search filter in this case.

I didn't search through any sort of a search engine as such. I pulled up Plax's stats, then hit the "Game Log" link on his stats page. From there, I checked all the box scores where Plax hit triple figures in yardage. The Sept. '06 game vs. Philly was the only one that returned another 100+ yard receiving yardage game for the Giants.

Sorry I was unable to take that bet SW but I was without internet for a while there. It's too bad for you because I would have taken that bet.

I think Dallas has the ability to win by nine but with the inconsistant play of the offense as of late I wouldn't take that bet. Vegas has them anywhere bettwen 1.5 and 3 (http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/las-vegas/) and that sounds about right to me.
I'm not trying to bag on big blue but what happened to the Giants dude? They looked like one of the best teams in the league for 5 weeks and then just went into freefall. The biggest suprise to me is that everyone thought that D line was going to live in opposing backfieldsand it seems like they can't get any pressure on the QB. What happened?
Are they missing their old D coordinator?
Is it injuries that I'm not following?
Are they just not that good and benifited from a soft schedual early in the season?

Betting on Romo in December is kind of like betting on Jenna Jameson in a chastity contest.
Then again, the Giants seem to have lost their way as well.

Thank for reminding me. Why don't ya throw in that the Boys have to play three division games, (two of which are away) the Chargers, and have to travel to New Orleans as well.
I'll be happy if they can squeak out three wins in Dec.

True but the same is often said of Eli so...

pauly: i think it's just the old defensive coordinator, spagnuolo. the current one (and i'm hoping we won't see him next season) is working with the same bodies and there's nothing going on defensively. plus, look at the quality of the teams the giants played while getting to 5-0. i mean, besides dallas, those teams all suck. so the giants were way overrated, and then they ran into the buzzsaw called new orleans--i think that's done a hell of a number on their psyche collectively.

i should point out however that yes, some of the DEs (notably, osi umenyiori and justin tuck) are dinged, the latter due to flozell the asshat adams tripping him in week 2.

Hey if you aren't cheating you aren't trying
Seriously though, it seems like every time I see a holding or false start penelty they are calling #76. I don't think that was a malicious play just one wher he got beat and tried anything to protect his QB.
Adams used to be a beast but father time is catching up with him and it shows in his play. Unless the Cowboys have another crappy draft I don't see him playing more than another year or two with a star on his helmet.
You also have to remember that good teams find a way to win with injuries even to key players. Most noteably Brady last year and half the NO secondary last week.

you're right about the good teams winning despite injuries. that's just me being cranky about big blue being more like cerulean smurfs.

I hate this meme. Good teams don't win despite injuries. They don't win despite bad weather, they don't win on the road. A good team might do all those things but it's not what makes them a good team.

I disagree. If you can only win at home, in good weather, and when you are healthy how can you call yourself a good team?
Good teams find a way to win despite setbacks and when their oppenent has the advantage. It dosen't matter if that advantage is due to injuries, crowd noise, or how much time is left on the clock. They find a way to overcome those advantages.

actually: yes, they do. but the mistake you're making is in the next sentence.
**** quoth:

it isn't what makes them a good team, you're absolutely right about that. but they're certainly hallmarks of a good team. a good team wins games. that's the bottom line. overcoming those disadvantages are how a team wins games, dude. c'mon, you know that just as well as i do--hell, probably better.
nobody's making the argument that winning in bad weather, winning in your road jersey or winning despite injuries are the traits that make a team good. but they're very often routes to winning--and that certainly makes a team good. IOW: i think you're framing it incorrectly.

Uhm...OK...but they do.
That's not to say even the best team could suffer a plethora of injuries and keep on trucking, but only that a good team doesn't rely on one or two players to win.
A good team wins, period. That is what makes them a good team.
My beloved Patriots went 10-6 last year, a record that almost always makes the playoffs, despite losing their lynchpin in Q1 of game 1.

as is being fairly widely (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=umenyiora+demotion&aq=f&oq=&aqi=) reported, NYG DE osi umenyiora was practicing with the 2nd team at the end of the week, as was tackle fred robbins. however, RB ahmad bradshaw, while listed as questionable, is likely to play, IMHO.
i'm very dubious about the fact that aaron ross is moving to safety in the base defense and positively fearful about cc brown being part of the base d. this suggests romo will have a good day--and in any other month, i'd concede the game before it's played.

You never know with Romo. He could leave the Giants secondary in smoking ruins or he could go out there, throw 5 picks, (he's done it before) and make Coughlin look like a genuis.

my thinking is umenyiora's benching is supposed to get him fired up. hell, it would light a fire under my butt, and mine isn't being paid millions...

I take that back. According to this (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast) video (bottom of the page) from ESPN Adams tried to trip him more than once. It wouldn't suprise me if Tuck smacks Adams around a bit today.

i gotta say, i really thought dallas was gonna take this one, until hixon returned that punt for 6. it seemed to me that whatever momentum dallas had in the game just stopped right there.
and what the hell happened at the end of the first half? it looked like adams was looking to start a fight without provocation--and were the fox analysts right that the giants declined an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to open the 3rd quarter?
sorry your guys lost this one, dude.

Don't appoligize Big Blue won fair and square.
I think Dallas could have had that game but they fell apart at the end of the first half. I have no idea what Adams was thinking. My best guess is a Giant said something about them soring twice so quickly before the end of the half and he lost it. I saw a clip of it durring the halftime show. Adams just flat out took a swing at somebody. I wouldn't of have been upset if he was ejected.
Congrats dude
GO BIG BLUE!!

yeah, i think you're probably right about adams.
you know, i was thinking when i saw it, "WTF, why isn't he being ejected?" and then i realized that i didn't know what kinds of things do merit being ejected.
