((Leo and François will be joining in the action in this thread, but they haven't quite gotten to the end of the scene in Avalon yet.))

"Oh, I can totally see why shes evil then, those things . . . well . . ick"
Sidana's good twin giggles from inside your head, but her mirth is cut short by a scraping sound that comes from the base of the tower. When you look down, you see a giant man-wolf hybrid with a lambent green glow in its eyes sharpening its talons, and sparks fly as it drags its hands back and forth across the stone. Several creatures much like the insect-men you battled before surround it, and none of them stand as tall as the wolfman's chest.

From the other side of the tower's base, a second Garou appears, also in hybrid wolfman form and also sharpening its claws. A girl emerges from behind this Garou, alike in form and visage to the good twin, although her red hair is shorter and more orderly. She is clothed in blue jeans and a loose-fitting shirt, and appears unarmed.

"She is the one who has given you such troubles?" she says to an unseen companion. The voice is the same as the good twin's, although a sneering tone replaces the mischief evident in the other's voice. Another girl emerges from behind the second Garou once it is finished sharpening its talons, one you recognize instantly.

"She wears a sword, Sidana," says Heather. "She did not bring that with her when she first entered the astral plane. Who might have given her that, I wonder?"

"I do not, and I fervently hope to see my Sire during this little excursion. Especially if she has been reduced to fetching stray kittens." A cruel smile forms on Sidana's lips, and her right hand closes onto a spear that was not there a moment ago.

"What do you say, childe, would you like a peck on the cheek from Rhongomyniad?" Sidana hefts the spear in your general direction, and changes her hold on it to a two-handed grip.

Jocelin glowers at Heather for a while before finally dragging her attention toward Sidana

"Good day Sidana . . . . I wouldn't care to fight you, actually, Id like to help you get back together with your good twin and family . . . though I really do suggest that Heather cant possibly be a good influence"

"Im really quite sure you do, she looks like you, except with less orderly hair and much less clothes. She was at this tower when I came here, and wound up sending me into outer space for a bit actually. Everyone has family, family are friends God chooses for you, so, since it is His choice, its very important to maintain. Also she asked me to help you out, so you can be together when your father and mother arrive, they apparently are coming, and are needed to open the gate"

"As for the sword, St Anthony sent it to me after I came to this strange realm, when I was in need"

"She is of your clan?" Sidana asks Heather, though her face is dubious during the asking.

"No, her temper is much too fierce for that, and she lacks the wit to flourish while bearing the blessing and the curse of Malkav," answers Heather. Sidana turns back to you.

"My mortal family is dead, nearly nine centuries gone, girl. My immortal family sent me to perish, fled from my downfall, left me to rot. I have no desire for a reunion, save that I would destroy them if given the chance. In neither family did I have a twin."

"So, you should know, I do not lie"

"Fine by me," says Sidana, who gives Heather a look, who in turn taps the Garou next to her on the hip. The Garou launches itself at you, and when the group on the other side sees this, they all begin floating upwards towards you, ascending at about the rate a typical elevator does.

Game on. ;)

"Heather is a werewolf? Well, I always knew she was a bitch"

Jocelin draws her sword (use quickdraw for not an action), and will want to raise Celerity (or if I think I have time, raise Potence then Celerity . . . using the Potence to fuel Celerity, sure, will probably keel over in a coma when the Potence runs out, but, at that time I hopefully wont be surrounded by werewolves and bugs)

You can raise Potence, then Celerity, but the Garou hurtling towards you would have the first attack in that case. You can have Potence 5 for 10 minutes and Celerity 4 for 2 hours or Celerity 5 for 1 hour for a net cost of 8 or 10 Fatigue, respectively.

However, if you power Celerity first, you can go first. That will also limit how high you can raise your Potence, since Jocelin presently doesn't have access to the Fatigue battery. In that case, your best bet is probably Celerity 4 for 10 minutes + Potence 3 for 10 minutes, and would cost 9 Fatigue, although you would be at 6 Fatigue after power Potence, and thus incur no Fatigue-related penalties.

Kalzazz
08-12-2009, 08:15 PM
Celerity 4, Potence 3 option then. Jocelin has overconfidence, so wont actually bother trying to quickdraw her sword until the things are upon her, then try an iajutsu strike

Also, everyone knows werewolves tend to regenerate, so Jocelin will be aiming for the neck

As the Garou lunges at you, you see that its fur is replaced by a chitinous covering, similar to the insect-men yet not quite a exoskeleton. The effect is mildly unnerving, but you think your aim is true for a beheading stroke for when your foe enters the sweeping arc of your blade's reach. At the last moment, however, the Garou straightens upright, and your first swing instead leaves a diagonal gash across it abdomen.

Your foe stands head, shoulders, and chest above you. As you adjust to take a second swing at its neck, the Garou grabs you with terrible strength, exhibiting a ferocious agility scarcely to be believed of one so large. Its grasp settles on your arms just below each of your shoulders. Then the Garou pulls you to closer to it, and unleashes a blood-curdling howl in your face, the promise of your destruction writ large in the sickly green glow of its eyes.

((Jocelin's up, she passed her Fright Check, but is presently grappled.))

"Indeed Milord" responds Francois. "Though if I might say, I find it exceedingly cruel fate that I have not the time to continue discussion with you. You are, I think, the first honest person I have spoken to in centuries."
"Perhaps we will have a respite after the rescue mission to speak at further length," replies Arthur.

When you reach the base of the tower, Gwynnis and Meerlinda are waiting there. Arthur leads everyone up to the top of the tower. The tower is furnished to hold a moderate-sized garrison, although there are no weapons or armor that you see as you ascend.

Arthur moves to the eastern side of the tower and moves Excalibur around a rectangular, door-sized perimeter. He then swings... something open, and you see darkness beyond the opening. You also hear an earsplitting howl that appears to originate beyond the western side of the tower, although you don't see its source at the moment.

================

Jocelin sees a shaft of light appear from the other side of the tower. She's near the top of the tower, but not quite at its top, when it appears.

Jocelin thinks this is absolutely not at all what she was planning, she tries to bring her legs up and kick off its chest to break free of the beasties grip
Its grip is like iron, its torso solid rock, and its arms are as long as you are tall. You can't seem to budge it at all, and the beast moves you in a crushing hug down towards its abdomen. It is bleeding a vivid orange substance that burns on contact. You see shaft of brilliant light come from the top of the tower just as the creature's blood comes into contact with you.

((Jocelin takes 7 aggravated damage.))

Looking at Gwynnis, Francois inquires "Once more into the breech then?"
"Find your comrade and free her," the Justicar replies.

When you exit through the portal, the first thing you see is Heather and a red-haired girl about Jocelin's age and holding a spear floating up the side of the tower. Gwynnis says, "You!" when she sees the pair. "Go!" the Justicar commands, urging François and Leo to find Jocelin with a vague gesture away from herself.

Upon further survey of the situation, you find Jocelin in the grasp of a monstrous man-wolf beast whose eyes glow a sickly green. Their heads are about level with each other, but Jocelin's legs are getting smeared through some sort of bright orange liquid coming from the creature's abdomen, which sports a rapidly healing wound. A second man-wolf beast heads upward, accompanied by half a dozen bizarre insect-men who have 6 limbs and an exoskeleton but seem capable of walking on their hind legs, if necessary.

((Assuming François draws his weapon as he steps out...))

Meerlinda grasps François's rapier for a moment, and its appearance changes, taking on an even more silvery sheen than normal.

"Hello there Fido", Francois calls to the wolf who is engaged with Jocelyn; "I hate to interrupt your hug, but I came here for a fight. Care to indulge me?" With that he flings himself with the previously activated celerity towards the wolf man.

Right when you both charge toward the Garou grappling with Jocelin, you sense a blur of motion behind you. Then the sounds of metal striking wood and metal piercing flesh follow in order swiftly thereafter. The Justicar then gives a wordless shout of pain.

François closes the gap an instant earlier than Leo, and the point of his blade finds purchase in the creature's exposed right side. It takes most of his effort to pierce the beast's carapace, but he does draw some more of its vivid orange blood. The Garou turns towards the source of his injury and manages to barely elude the second thrust from François.

Between the dodging and turning, Leo's grasp finds the werewolf's left arm instead of Jocelin. Heaving with all his might, he manages to wrench the Garou's left hand off of Jocelin, although in the process it does leave shallows furrows in her clothing and flesh. Jocelin's right arm is free.

((François's action was a move/attack/attack combo, with the move taking the place of one of the additional attacks he's normally entitled to with Celerity 5 active. Jocelin took a smidgen more of aggravated damage when Leo managed to get one of her arms free, but I'm going to wait until after she and her grappler go before toting up the damage she's taken.))

Between the struggle with the Garou, its cloying and corrosive blood on your legs, and the claw marks on her shoulder, Jocelin feels a Frenzy of epic proportions start to build. Then she hears the good twin's voice inside her head:

"If you're going to fight angry, let your weapon do the talking," she says. You feel the white-hot rage of full Frenzy for a split-second before it somehow channels into your blade, which for the moment glows with your burning wrath.

Its head is turned, but I'll say you can stab it through the ear for the same penalties and desirable effects if the attack is successful. I've got a telecon coming up, and then will resolve the attack sometime after that.

OK, this is a trickier situation mechanically than I first realized. This is how things will play out:

Normally a katana can't be wielded effectively in close combat. Since the Garou has long arms and only has a one-handed hold on Jocelin, I'm going to say that she can maneuver herself one hex away from the Garou to make her stabs, but it will take her move action and the additional attacks from her Celerity to do this. She'll still get the Weapon Master bonus attacks, so the net result is that she will take two attacks to stab the Garou in the eye. She will still be held, as her opponent severely outclasses her ST-wise, even with some Potence buffing for Jocelin.

Modifiers work out as: -8 for attempting to hit the Garou's eye (which I'll rule has the same proportionate size increase as its body), +3 for the maneuver, and -2 close-combat penalty still applies because Jocelin is still grappled, she's just being grappled at a one-hex distance. This gives her an effective weapon skill of 12, and the Garou will try dodging any blows that land by the attack rolls.

((I did buy up the Close Combat manuever for the Katana by 1 . . . which makes the katana usable at reach C at -4 penalty, provided have an empty hex behind me. I didnt realize I was at reach C when I did earlier guestimation))

edit (also probably doing this one handed, so doing one handed damage and using inferior 1 handed parry if have a parryable attack sent my way)

((I did buy up the Close Combat manuever for the Katana by 1))
It's a moot point in this particular instance since Jocelin hit both her attacks and neither was dodged. I probably would have ruled that stabbing the Garou through the eyes wouldn't have been possible at close combat range anyways. However skilled Jocelin is with the katana, Plastic Girl she ain't. On to the resolution:

Those of you attempting rescue of Jocelin watch as she twists in the one-handed grip that holds her, her sword flaring orange in her wrath. Then, in motions that combine blinding precision and deadly speed, she stabs the Garou in one eye, extracts her blade, and stabs out the other eye. The flesh of the Garou's head melts around its skull in bloody ruin.

Three sprays of something fountain up towards you. One of them hits the body of the now-deceased Garou, and its carapace dissolves with a little extra damage to the flesh beneath passing through. It is a foul-smelling compound, whatever it is. Three of insect-men have gotten close enough to spit at you, it seems. The other three and the second Garou are headed towards the opening in the tower, and will be able to interpose themselves between you and it before you can get there.

A quick look in that direction reveals that the red-haired girl has skewered Gwynnis through her abdomen. Those of you with melee training would recognize from the positioning of her hands and the metal-on-wood sound that the girl was aiming for the heart, but the spear was parried downward somewhat during its thrust.

((Between the claw rake and the lingering acidic blood on Jocelin, she takes 6 more aggravated damage. That brings her total agg. damage suffered to 21.))

Yes, you can see Heather. The second Garou is next to her at the moment, a few yards beyond the gate, with the second trio of insect-men taking up position between you and them.

"To me" Francois calls as he flies towards Gwynnis and her attacker. As soon as he is close enough, Francois will attempt to sever her red head from her shoulders.

BTW, I have my PDF on my work CPU.

At -HT Jocelyn has to make a will roll to continue fighting.

At -HT, vampires don't take more damage, however they do lose 1 blood pt for every 2 damage they would take. At zero blood they fall into torpor.

Finally, if the vampire is at -HT and suffers an aggrivated wound, he will die the final death.

Jocelin doesn't pass out, but she is not in the best of shape. There are two sets of insect-men, the three that just vomited in your direction and are heading directly up at your present location, and the three that will be heading off those of you going to the portal at the pass. Which set is Leo going after?

Jocelin is going to go after Heather

Detritus
08-22-2009, 03:21 PM
In the time it takes Jocelin to head over to Heather and her Garou escort, the potency of the caustic orange blood smeared on her finally gives out after one last lingering bit of burn. The Garou rakes furrows on either side of its abdomen, and the same venomous blood appears on its talons and abdominal fur as a result.

((Jocelin takes 2 more aggravated damage.))

Leo engages two of the intervening insect-men as the third attempts unsuccessfully to hinder François's approach to the portal. The two on Leo both vomit as he approaches, and one stream hits him just before he barrels into them with a double clothesline. They are spinning head-over-heels-over-head as a result, but it is difficult to tell if they are otherwise damaged; their exoskeletons are quite hard.

((Leo takes 10 aggravated damage from the vomitous bile.))

"I believe that is my spear," François hears Arthur say to the redhead when he nears the fighting at the portal, "and only I am allowed to spear my bride." François's rapier meets the redhead's neck just as she has pulled out the spearpoint from Gwynnis and pierces Arthur's sword hand with it, inducing the king to drop Excalibur. Her neck feels hard as steel upon contact with the blade's point, and remains unmarred. The redhead then shifts her grip on the spear and pivots, striking François with its butt end with surprising force.

"You are interfering in family matters," the redhead says to you. The spear whirls to parry a sword blow.

"This is not your fight, François," Gwynnis says, now holding Excalibur, her gaze and stance steady despite her wound. "May I suggest collecting your clan mate before she does something rash, and irreversible? It would be a shame to have all this effort go for naught."

((François will get to act next, before any of bad guys (and other PCs, who have just gone, of course), but I resolved the other PC's actions already, so I'll relay what happens with those attacks.))

"I don't think this is a good idea," says the voice in Jocelin's head, but she manages to ignore it in her ardor to reach Heather.

Heedless of any danger to life or limb, Jocelin charges the other Garou, katana whirling. The beast manages to evade the first attack to its right arm, but sets itself up to absorb a near-crippling blow to its left arm in the process. The thrust to the vitals would have struck true but for its second successful dodge, and the swing to the brain pan lands solidly but doesn't seem to penetrate the Garou's carapace. The final swing to the neck connects but barely draws a trickle of blood, most of the blade's energy blunted by the Garou's toughened outer shell.

((In game terms, 4 damage got through DR on the left arm attack for 6 damage taken, and 1 got through DR on the neck attack, which is still just 1 damage.))

Meanwhile, Leo's doubling back catches the advancing insect-men off their guard. He lands a spinning blow with his left arm on one of the three, and manages to knock the second into the third with his right arm. For the moment, five of the six insect-men are off balance, but it is unclear how long that will last.

((Leo's second attack roll was a crit, which I'm ruling as having putting two of the insect-men off balance instead of one.))

The Garou snarls, half sneer, half gesture of pain, as its superficial neck wound closes up. Heather, using her companion as cover, holds her right hand in a gun shape, a small flame playing on her index finger's tip. She begins to lower her wrist to point at Jocelin.

Some permutations of what you might do in François's and the opponents' turns:

François can spend up to 5 blood a turn. He can spend 5 blood + 2 Fatigue to re-activate either Celerity or Potence and have it stack with what he's already activated. This would give either a +10 to Move or ST, respectively.

Jocelin's tie to Gwynnis is now re-established firmly enough that she can pass on damage to the Justicar. It's a Conscience roll to pass on normal damage, and a Conscience - 4 roll to pass on aggravated damage. On a failed Conscience roll, you may still pass on the damage, but your Humanity score will drop by 1 permanently. This option is/was in play all along for Leo and François, but they haven't been in dire enough straits to really have need to use this feature of the link yet.

Hearing the Justicar's words, Francois turns back, and see's the unhealing wounds on Jocelyn and Leo. A brief tick in his eyebrow indicates that he has made a tactical decision.

((I popped a 5 on the Garou's first attack roll in the round. His Brawling skill is definitely 15+, so no parrying or dodging possible. Jocelin takes 8 more aggravated damage, which is enough at this point to send her to Final Death. Decision time.))

Meanwhile, the sounds of metal on wood continue in the battle between Gwynnis and the redhead.

"You always were such a pretty girl, Sidana," says Gwynnis. "But that trick won't work again. Perhaps I should make this sporting." Those of you who can see the Justicar notice that she closes her eyes, yet still presses her attack, giving everything that Sidana can handle to keep Excalibur off of her.

"You always did like to preen, Majesty," replies Sidana, scorn and contempt dripping from that last word. "But it will be your undoing this time. Well, not yours, exactly."

As soon as Sidana finishes speaking, the tower atop Glastonbury Tor is rocked to its foundation, and begins to shake violently.

"The shrine," Gwynnis breathes. "The gate closes now! It will not open again!" Gwynnis leaps off the top of the tower towards the shrine, and the beam of light that issues forth into Deep Umbra begins to narrow.
