short version: the architect of philly's impressive defense, jim johnson, is on indefinite leave to battle a cancerous tumor on his spine. mcdermott was the secondary coach. long version here (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfceast/0-12-70/Eagles--Johnson-will-not-be-easy-to-replace.html).

commentary: as a football fan and someone who watches most eagles games in addition to my giants, i have nothing but the utmost respect for jim johnson. mcdermott's got some pretty big shoes to fill, and in different local coverage, in his first press conference showed the proper respect for johnson.

I hadn't realized Johnson was that seriously ill. ESPN reports that Johnson has died:
