When you come to, you see that your silver cord is no longer attached to your body. You're no longer tumbling, but you do seem to be drifting... West? North? You see the full moon somewhat lower in the sky than it was before, and also in a more southerly direction compared to New Orleans.

When you look down, it takes a little time but eventually you recognize the western coastline of Alaska resolving under you. You look to the west, and you can see Russia from where you are! Nobody who was above the mansion in New Orleans is within sight.

What now?

"Uhhh, hello? Justicar Gwynnis?"
The Justicar does not answer. You hear a faint clicking sound off in the distance, from a south-ish direction. A squint that way reveals something vaguely... insectile in form approaching you. It seems to be moving much more slowly than you, your allies, and your foes did during the battle above the dome.

Jocelin says a prayer to St Anthony, and then goes to investigate the clicking thing

Detritus
07-17-2009, 12:46 AM
As you move towards it, you see it's kind of like a hybrid between a praying mantis and a human. There's a second pair of arms extending outwards from just above the hip bones, and all four arms are insectile. The legs still seem human. The head is definitely more mantis than human.

At a distance of about 1,000 yards, you realize the clicking is some form of communication, and that there's more than one of them. Maybe 8-10 all told.

It's not Morse Code. It may be like Morse Code, but you can't really understand it. There are no dots and dashes, f'r instance.

If you gesture at them from a distance of several hundred yards, not much will change. They'll continue advancing at walking speed, clicking and clacking all the while.

As they draw closer, you notice that all the arms (but not the feet) end in rather long talons, and that they all have chitinous exoskeletons.

OK, you close to within conversational distance. For a few seconds, the insect things just click and clack away with each other, then they leader opens its mandibles and vomits forth a rather putrid-looking stream of... stuff at you. Your quick reflexes allow you to evade the stream fairly easily. Then the others behind the leader begin to raise their four arms, and start swinging their in your general direction...

Standby, and hold that thought...
Actually, let's do one round of this in hand-to-hand:

Jocelin whizzes in and lands three solid blows, but the insectile carapaces are extremely hard, and you're not sure if you really did much in the way of damage to your targets, even with your enhanced strength.

Meanwhile, you manage to dodge a few talon attack, and several others simply miss outright. Then you start to hear a silvery chime...

((And, now we standby for a bit...))

Detritus
07-17-2009, 09:44 PM
Then you start to hear a silvery chime...
The chime grows louder, and then suddenly, miracle of miracles, you see your katana spinning above you, just out of reach. St. Anthony must have answered your prayer! The blade spins quite fast, yet it seems that all you have to do is reach up to take it.

You jump out of the altercation with the insect men for a moment, and it almost feels like you're using The Force to reach up and pluck your spinning sword by its hilt. Once it's in your grasp, you feel it thrumming with muted power. The insect men move to pursue you, evidently heedless of your new armament.

Another of the insect men pukes in your general direction, but does not manage to hit you.

((There are three insect men next to you and five in a row beyond them right now. I take it you'll be making a full set of attacks, but if there's anything else you're thinking of doing, let me know.))

OK, their exoskeletons are reasonably tough to penetrate even with sword in hand, but you do manage to slice one to ribbons, though it takes all three attacks, and cut one of the arms off another when you parry its blow.

Some of the insect men in the second arc begin to float upwards a bit. Will Jocelin be continuing with the full-on engagement tactics?

Kalzazz
07-20-2009, 12:39 AM
Jocelin now thinks perhaps different tactics are in order since these things are quite resilient, and will switch her aim toward ankles/feet and try to share the wealth of her attacks among multiple targets, hoping to slow some of them down so as to discourage getting swamped

((Also if her katana has higher reach than these things claws, definitely take Step and Attack to open range a bit))

You have similar reach with your katana as the bugfolk do with their bug-arms.

With long up-and-down sweeps, you manage to sever all the arms of the two active bugmen nearest to you. They begin to move back to allow others who are uninjured to engage you.

One of the ones who began floating upwards uncorks a load of bilious insectile vomit that you can't quite manage to avoid. It stings like a mofo (doing 4 points of aggravated damage), but you think it would have been much worse without the blessing of Fortitude from your link with Gwynnis.

The current tally is one bugman destroyed, two who are now armless (but still have their legs), three who are floating a few hexes above you, and two more who have just stepped into melee range.

((I thought I was trying to target ankles/feet?))
Right, I messed that up. I thought the targets were arms and feet.

However, part of the mess-up arose because I had internalized the fact that this battle is happening in mid-air, and that the insect people were flying/floating, albeit without wings, much like Jocelin. This may have not been clear from the write-up, especially given that they were described as approaching at walking speed, but the battle is taking place like 50 miles above the (Deep Umbral) Alaskan coastline.

I'll give you the choice as to whether you want the four legs or eight arms cut off, or any combination that trades one leg for two arms.

Kalzazz
07-21-2009, 12:34 AM
First shot is definitely a leg. If that seems to have a salutary effect (for Jocelin, not the bugs) proceed with that plan, otherwise switch to lopping off arms

OK, first swing hits a leg, a few inches above the "foot." It doesn't really seem to hamper the beasty that much, as it tries to claw at you anyways. Then you can proceed to arms, and since you get five attacks now, I'll throw in the leg with the 8 arms that I narrated Jocelin getting before.

Your vorpal blade goes snicker-snack, and takes off the heads of the two insect-men in front of you. You dart upwards to try taking the head of the one who puked on you, but your sword rebounds off the creature's neck. You use the rebound to start a looping swing that takes off the head of the one standing next to the successful vomiter, but the follow-through stroke sees your sword catching in the crook between neck and shoulder of the vomiter.

The two wounded insect-men both vomit towards you. One stream misses, the other hits both you and the other insect-man, but neither of you are any the worse for wear. You dodge some talon thrusts from the one who your blade is caught in, and then all remaining functional insect-men start to turn. At the end of a quarter turn, they're all gone. It's only then that your mind seems to register the putrid stench of the vomit, which disorients you for about a minute.

After snapping out of this funk, you think to yourself, "What's next?" When you do, a dull red glow emanates from either side of the flat of your blade. One side reads SOMERSET and the other side reads GLASTONBURY TOR, both written in what appears to be blood, in what you would take to be a feminine hand.

With a bit of (fatiguing) mental effort, you manage to clear yourself of the vomit that's on you, although the scent lingers for a while even after that. However, you don't go anywhere when you brandish the sword. It might be trying to point somewhere of its own volition.

Given that Jocelin is at latitudes near where lands of the midnight sun exist, and that she's presently at an altitude of 50 miles or so, it doesn't take long for her to encounter conditions on her western horizon that look suspiciously like dusk. Your sword has generic advice to angle lower and more southerly, if you don't want to test the sunlight.

((OOC -- In general terms of what course Jocelin traverses, it's just a matter of how carefully you want to play it with the sunlight at this point. You're not sure how effective your borrowed Fortitude might be vs. astral sunlight. The further south and lower you go, the less risk there is with running up the back of a sunset, although at top speed you'll encounter one reasonably soon as long as you generally head west. It does take longer than encountering sunrise if you'd have headed east, and that was the basis of the original advice from your katana.))

You steel your courage and head into the brightening sunset. Russia streaks below you as you move. You don't have any problem while the Sun is below the horizon, and even when it peeks up in a reverse sunrise effect, you manage to proceed. As far as you can tell, your Fortitude seems to protect you against the sunlight.

When the Sun is about twice its own height above the western horizon, your Potence suddenly wears off. You stop for a moment as several things occur to you:

You're not sure how long your Fortitude will remain up. Furthermore, given that you were unable to contact Gwynnis once your cord was severed, you're unsure if you can reactivate Fortitude once this instantiation of it wears off.

It also occurs to you that you're not entirely certain that your katana knows what to do once you arrive to your destination. Some quick mental sums reveal that since it's around sunset where you are now, deep in the heart of Mother Russia, it will probably be around midday when you arrive at Glastonbury Tor. It could be a long time unsheltered in the Sun if your sword doesn't know what to do when you reach your destination.

You also are not completely positive that you have seen the last of whatever the hell those things were you just fought. Engaging a group of them in sunlight and without Fortitude active might end up being a Very Bad Thing. Neither do you have the slightest idea whether those insect things have an adverse reaction to sunlight the way the Kindred do.

You pass over Moscow about half an hour after first encountering the Sun, and then Minsk and Prague in rapid succession, before arriving at Paris, where you take in the sights for a brief time. After reaching the ocean you let your katana point again, and it more or less points north, maybe a bit west of due north.

As you approach your destination, you need to slow down considerably to receive proper guidance from your blade. The Sun has not quite reached its zenith when you come upon a small city surrounded by rolling hills, near England's western coast, and not too far north of the southern coast. Ruins lie near to the city, a cathedral and an abbey at the very least, you would guess. Something that looks like a modest country resort encloses the ruins.

As your eye follows the lay of the land, it is drawn to one hill that is taller than the others, and the ruins of a tower lie atop the hill. You know instantly that you have looked upon Glastonbury Tor.

...?

Just as you come to this decision, another reason presents itself to go to ground -- you feel the effects of your Fortitude wear off. You flinch as it happens, but there's no immediate adverse effect. Any attempt to try to re-raise Fortitude meets with failure.

When you head downwards, you find the tower's foundation, but there isn't much of interest there, really. A short time after reaching the foundation, you hear a voice say:

"Silly girl, why do you cower and flee from the Sun? It doesn't ever show its face, not out here. Someone has played a trick on you."

The voice is feminine, and carries more than a hint of mischief in its tone, but you don't see anyone when you turn to look for the speaker.

"Of course you weren't cowering from the Sun, silly, because it isn't up! But you must be very important to have a name like that. Full of wind."

You feel the air stir, and it grows into a gentle breeze that begins to move your hair. The breeze stiffens, and strengthens, and then you feel it begin to circulate, to turn around upon itself. Soon it is a full-blown gale and more, truly a hurricane, and you feel yourself rise out of tower, spinning round and round. All attempts to move out of the breeze meet in failure, and the tower spirals out of sight.

You hear tinkling laughter in your ears as the Sun blows away. Soon there is nothing but midnight blue beneath you, and you seem to be blown west, west, south, and west. And south. Then west some more. At least, that's what you think, but your head is spinning, so who can say for sure?

When you finally stop spinning and swirling, neither Sun nor Moon is up. The air feels warm and humid.

When you first start to move, you find yourself swiftly sweeping out a great arc of roughly circular shape. It's hard to tell how fast you're moving upwards, but you don't feel any sort of flipping in the up-down direction. It takes about a minute to complete a circuit, and you don't think you've moved upwards any faster than your normal running speed in that time. You don't see any land.

A couple more things:

When you start actively following your katana, you find that you have an easier time moving through whatever effect whoever that was slapped on you back at the Tor. It takes some effort, but you begin to move faster and faster towards your destination, and the flyaway feeling diminishes as you pick up speed. The sky remains dark as you approach Somerset once more.

You look up, and see The Hunter overhead, shoulders -- belt, and feet shining bright -- and then a wave of lassitude washes over you. You realize that the sun is rising in New Orleans, where your body lies, and you find a cozy spot in the ruins of the tower to curl up and pass daytime in Louisiana while your spirit resides in the ruins of Glastonbury Tor.

Your daytime slumber is occasionally disturbed by the odd random dream.

You watch Rebekka on TV, and she gives a weather report on a "Hurricane Jocelin" about to make landfall in New Orleans, and how its destructive power could be as much as 10 times as large as Hurricane Katrina.

Then you hear a gruff voice say, "I'll huff, and I'll puff, 'til I blow your house down." The wind rises in the tower, and you leave its confines.

When you do, the wind suddenly dies down. Then you notice the appearance of light from the corner of your eye, and it looks like someone is opening a door onto a sunlit room high in the tower.

"Come into the light, Carol Anne," you hear Sarah's voice say, but you're afraid of the light. You study it for a moment, and then shapes resolve in the forms of several large man-wolf hybrids.

"My, what big fangs you have," you say in your startlement, and you hear a maddeningly familiar female voice say, "All the better to eat you with." You see Heather step out from behind one of the man-wolf forms, and she points at you, whereupon the wolf-men charge with inhuman speed. Just as the first is about to close its grasp around your neck, you wake up.

A westering moon one night past full sinks towards the horizon. The Sun has set in New Orleans, but your prospects seem not to have changed much in the interim. For the first time since you arrived, you register the apple orchards spread out before you across Somerset county in your mind.

"Oh, who's a clever girl now? You're getting warmer, but it still won't work. Mother has the key, but only father can open the door."

"And where are your parents then?"

Jocelin turns and looks above and behind her

You don't see anything, for now.

"You were doing so well there for a moment," the voice says, and then you hear an avian trill. "Take that sunken eye and learn to see."

You make little headway in your attempt at umbral masonry.

"No, no, no," the voice says. "I already told you, only father can open the door, but mother has to bring him the key. What do swords have to do with eyes, anyways? Do you think with that blade, too?"

OK, so the decision here is NOT to activate any form of Auspex when looking for the invisible interlocutor? I've pretty much run out of anvils here.

((Uh, I dont have Auspex))

((edit: admittedly, I also hadnt thought of using it - I did want to make Occult or Architecture checks, but dont have those skills))

The "take that sunken eye" line a few posts back was in reference to the Justicar's eye, which is still lodged in your forehead, although the other connection to her is lost to you for now. You've still got the Auspex the eye grants you. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

((Oh! Well, it wasnt clear to me, but then, I also thought 'blame Al Qaida' and 'the Superdome's 50yard line would be an awesome place for a showdown!'))

Jocelin tries to activate Auspex! ((Whichever level is needed for seeing ghosts))

We'll call it Auspex 2 = 4 Fatigue.

When you look around again, you see someone who looks about your age, a little above a behind you (behind you before you turned around, that is). She has long red hair reaching beyond her waist, and it has a bit of a wild appearance to it. She is slender and probably a bit shorter than Jocelin, and is quite lovely. She wears not a stitch of clothing, but her hair conceals her naughty bits.

"Found me at last," she says, grinning, and she flies down until you can see eye to eye without having to look upwards. "I guess the third time really is the charm."

"I'm the good twin," the girl says. "You have to watch out for my evil twin. Her name is Sidana, and she's very mean, although she used not to be, when we were together. But I don't think anyone knows she's alive, not even mother."

The girl thinks for a moment. "Do you think you could help us get back together?"

"Sure, how can I do that? Family values are totally important"

"Oh, goody!" Sidana's Good Twin exclaims. She claps her hands several times in rapid succession, and you get the impression that if she were standing on solid ground that she would be hopping up and down, or at least bouncing onto the balls of her feet and back again. She continues after she stops clapping.

"I'm sure if you can bring Sidana and me together before mother that she'll know what to do!"

Without further warning, SGT flits towards you and seems to step into you. Reality lurches for a moment before settling down again, and then you find yourself alone once more.

A tiny, girlish voice speaks in your head.

<<Oh, I'm sure she'll be along soon. Who do you think sent those things after you?>>
