Right now I'm testing the waters playing straight Space Marines right now(read genetic supersoldiers)....but I might switch back to WH/sisters of battle, changing my mind. I have effectively till the end of teh month to decide....
The idea of the campaign is various forces are fighting over a planet, with the continents broken up into various sections....
Right now we're having pre-campaign tournments to determine placing and other extra items(fortifications, reinforcements, etc....). 3 games, each with different levels of playability. Alpha(no special rules), Gamma(some rules), Omega(ALL are in effect). A win gives you 3pts, 1 pt for killing the general, 1pt if you massacre your opponent......losses get you nothing.
Game one, Alpha, Take and hold, vs Necrons. Game lasts 6 turns.
necrons, are very similar to say, thsoe funny robots in terminator. They have a unique special rule called, ironically enough, "we'll be back" On 4+ the dont die and stand back up.....so theoritically, you have to kill a model twice to kill it, statistically.....(unless you hit it with double its toughness weapon shooting, or a no save weapon in HTH- but even then they have wargear item which eliminates that weakness). They do have one other special rule....phase out. remove 75% of his army, the rest vanish and you autowin.
Take and hold, in Alpha, is exactly as it sounds: The player who has more points on the objective, wins. No matter how much you kill, take the objective...
My opponent had roughly 40 models......2 squads of 10 regular guys, 10 elite types, and 3 destroyers(basically floating gun platforms).
Highlights
He was relentless. His freaking destroyers kept getting back up, over and over and over again....sight. It took an ungodly amount of firepower to get rid of them.
I caught a break mid game, he left room for my general to jumppack in, and charge. My general is a Librarian, which means he has what's called a force sword....if I do a wound, make a leadership check.....I suck his soul out no matter how many wounds a model has.
One soul suck later.....and a failed WBB roll, we have one dead necron Lord. My general eventually fell to weight of numbers, but he did his job.
The rest of the game was a mop up from them. Relentless firepower, even with him on the objective, saw a Phase out by turn 6......
Game nets me 5 pts.
Game 2, vs Eldar, Omega level, recon mission.
Eldar, in case you wonder, are basically elves in space.....Annoying as hell, especially since they JUST got their new book released.
Omega has all the rules.....Things like infiltrate, deep strike, and most important, escalation. Which means if its a vehical, it starts off board. Turn 2 on you roll to see what comes on randomly.
HIS army had 3 foottroops, 3 walkers and a wraithlord, which is a unliving dreadnaught. And is led by a farseer.
Since my army is all vehical based, I have nothing. the first 2 turns fly by. All his stuff has turned up, only 2 of my smaller speeeders show up. He's advanced to the middle with a squad and a harliquin squad, and the farseer.
Highlights
Firepower again rules the day. I got luck with my One tank dropping his wraithlord in one volly. I also got luck his one middle squad dropped to half due to firepower, and ran away with his general....and kept running. Firepower was relentless...and he conceeded with one squad left.
Again, another 5 pts....
Game 3, vs Blood Angel marines, gamma, secure and control.
Gamma has a few rules, but neither army had anything to take advantage of them. Secure and control is a mission where there are several "loot" counters, the more you control, the more victory points you get at the end of the game. You can lose most of your army, and hold the counters and still win....
HIghlights
There really arent any. I wiped out one unit at a time...The only problem was the 'death company', a bucnh of fast moving lunatics that, much like necrons, dont want to die.....But after a time, and lots of shooting, and 2 of my squads getting butchered,,,they did.
5 pts to me....
So I neted 15 out of 15pts for development in the first tournment....The next closest was one at 11pts, one at 10.....
More to come later....
