Reports: Weapons, ammo seized at Burress' NJ home

Authorities seized a small cache of weapons and ammunition from the New Jersey home of New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, the New York Post and Newsday both reported Wednesday, possibly setting up the embattled player for more legal trouble.

The Post, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, said a 9-mm handgun, a rifle and ammunition for three other guns — a .380, a .45 and a .40, the same caliber of gun Burress accidentally shot himself with — were seized during the execution of a search warrant at Burress' home in Totowa.

Benjamin Brafman, the star receiver's criminal attorney, said Tuesday night that he was aware of only a rifle being taken from the home.

"I believe it was registered, but we're looking into that now," Brafman said. "I'm not informed at this time that he is facing additional charges."

If the weapons are unregistered, Burress could face more charges in New Jersey in addition to the two felony gun-possession charges he was slapped with following the accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last month.

"It is not illegal in New Jersey to have a registered weapon in your home," Brafman said.

Burress was not at home during the search by Totowa police, the NYPD and officials from the Manhattan District Attorney's office — though sources said his wife was at home. Brafman said his client is "out of town" but did not elaborate.

Also found in the search — but not seized, since it was unconnected to any criminal allegations — was a suitcase full of money.

Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh at the Latin Quarter nightclub on Nov. 29 when he fumbled with an unlicensed handgun tucked into the waistband of his sweat pants. He checked himself into New York-Cornell Hospital and later turned himself in to police.

The Giants suspended the Super Bowl hero for the rest of the season following the shooting and also withheld $1 million owed to him as part of his signing bonus.

Burress is due back in court on March 31 and faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison on each count.

Burress was also sued last week in Florida's Broward County Circuit Court for rear-ending a woman in May while driving his nearly $140,000 Mercedes-Benz without insurance.

Compounding the Super Bowl star's defense, according to a document provided by the woman's attorney, is the fact his car insurance lapsed three days before the crash. A letter from Allstate says Burress neglected to pay his premiums.

I liked the headline at ESPN.com a couple of days ago, which read "Weapons, ammo, pants seized at Burress' NJ home." The pants in question being the pair he was wearing when he accidentally shot himself.

OK, the incident involving the gun was over 2 weeks ago now, almost 3. WTF were those other weapons doing there, if unregistered?!

celebrity mentality probably. He assumes he's famous and no one is going to bother checking or looking into him.....

What really blows me away, according to reports, is his wife's a LAWYER. Who should know better. And he's hired a high powered one who should have said something to him or shuch.

perhaps unsurprisingly, giants GM jerry reese is leaving the door open to the prospect of plax suiting up in giants blue next year (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/01/more_from_new_york_giants_gm_r.html).

i think that tom coughlin and jerry reese need to talk. right now, the only way burress plays in the NFL next year is if the felony charges are dropped or the case is lost. either are utterly impossible given the known facts: bloomberg wants to make the case a circus, and the weapon was his, was illegal and public statements by both burress and his teammate acknowledge those facts.

Hmmm...

I didn't know they had a GM.

What system are they using to design their players? D20 Modern?

V&V?

GURPS?

The Giants don't need to have all the distractions that Plax brings with him but after dropping four of their last five games they do need pick up a big time time receiver to take his place.

And probably not staying in Cincinatti.

You can always use a guy like Housh on your team, but he doesn't replace everything that Burress brought to the table. If the Giants signed him, they're basically relying on Domenik Hixon being the guy that will stretch the field for them. He came on pretty strong down the stretch this year, but I'm not sure he's the guy for New York long term.

det: i love hixon's speed and attitude, but i hate his hands and periodic lack of focus. mostly that's true of steve smith, too. i'm hoping both work on that during the off-season somehow.

amani toomer's likely gone via free agency. boss has the size and was becoming a bigger part of the offense but he's definitely missing the speed.

reading a local sports writer's blog, i was surprised by the number of commenters wanting to throw antonio pierce under the bus. he was exploited by westbrook in the second philly game--but westbrook's the type of player who makes everybody look bad at some point.

I'm afraid to say that the one might have a little something to do with the other. The drops can be cured with a lot of quality time in the offseason with the Jugs machine, but it takes dedication to do it.

fair point, sir. i also wonder if perhaps he shouldn't spend more time with eli to get some of that same "same page"-ness eli seemed to have with burress.

local sports writer mike garafolo speculates (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2009/01/mg_speculates_could_chiefs_shu.html#more) about a potentially very interesting free agency pick-up: tony gonzalez. with kevin boss, this would make for some really interesting 2 TE sets.

but it's all just speculation, at least for now.
