i believe i heard giants defensive coordinator steve spagnuolo has a relatively new 3 year contract.

having said that: if the giants have even a modest playoff run--never mind actually repeat--what are the odds spagnuolo is going for a head coaching spot immediately afterwards?

i'm thinking he might want to stick around one more year, just so he can design more defenses with justin tuck and osi umenyiora, and additional experience as defensive coordinator might prepare him better for the big chair.

thoughts?

I think if he's under contract that they're not letting him go anywhere. They'd be crazy to do so without demanding high round draft picks.

Deep playoff runs tend to put coordinators from those teams a step behind in the interviewing cycle. It's hard to say, although he is one of the it guys in the pool of prospective coaches.

****: actually...given that jerry reese has had himself a few good drafts, esp the 2006 draft, and that the giants are likely going in the last 6 of each round...

det: that's true--but i'm failing to see how spagnuolo isn't the top name on several short lists, such as SF or CLE.

Except that every assistant coach contract I've ever heard of in the NFL allows for the contract to be voided for a promotion opportunity.

On the other hand, I'm not sure. Everyone talked about Romeo Crennel the same way they talk about Spag. And he's done nothing in (not Denver) Cleveland. Head Coach is a different skillset entirely.

that's a very good point, BB--i just hope that spagnuolo is taking notes from coughlin's sterling example. and selfishly, i do kinda hope that he fulfills the rest of the years on his contract.

what i keep hoping is that when coughlin decides to retire or at least leave the giants, he'll be the natural successor--sorta like what i expect jason garrett is doing in dallas.
