My new sourdough starter smells like beer.
Anyone know if this is normal?

Yes. It should be white or off-white creamy sort of color and bubbly.
I heard that sourdough isn't really common towards the east coast. Is that a true statement or was I misinformed?

I used a tip from this website (http://www.sourdoughhome.com/startingastarter.html), which was to use pineapple juice instead of water to get the right acidic pH for the right yeast to grow. It no longer smells like pineapple juice.
I started playing around with sourdough starters to get bread with a similar dense texture as in Austria. Let's just say I'm still learning. :D

I've been wanting to try white grape juice.
