I've heard Chim defend Batman as not a psycho but as as driven man - and I agree perfectly. That driven attitude has caused problems, but they are not insoluble, either.
A prime example of how well this can be handled by a good writer was found, IMHO, in this episode "Old Wounds", where Dick Grayson explains why he left and became Nightwing to Tim Drake.
Watch and comment, if you have time.

I much prefer the Timm Universe again and again to what is in print for DC. He has a good storytelling ability, keeps the old fogies like me happy and still leaves with hope, mercy, truth and courage as prime values.
He doesn't pander to children, and he doesn't go "all grit" - although you can tell as Batman ages and the war on crime continues, things get darker.
I guess I just gave my opinion. :D
