So which supers gaming systems have you played? I've played M&M, Champions (Hero), V&V, Superworld, DC Heroes (MEGS), and GURPS Supers. I've read Aberrant, but never played it.

Villians and vigilantes
Marvel super heroes
Dc heroes
Heroes unlimited
Teenage mutant ninja turtles
Champions

I think maybe one or two more. I have never tried mutants and masterminds mostly because I am not sure the d20 system would work well with a superhero game.

Marvel had the best source books and modules, it was the best looking.

Dc heroes appealed to me on the fact that it was logical, ( I loved that about villians and vigantes the most)

But really V and V was the best because it was complex but simple... I loved games where there was no fluff just rules some pictures. I really hate the new rpgs out there because it seems like they spend so much time wriing fluff pieces about motives that the rules have no meat.

the thing I dislike about v and v the most was the to hit table... it was needed but hand to hand was always so broken

Marvel Superheroes (FASERIP)
DC Heroes
V&V
Champions (3e-present)
M&M
Golden Heroes
Marvel Saga (Cards)

Marvel Superheroes (stones)
DC Universe (d6 Legend)
Deeds Not Words (d20)
Silver Age Sentinels (both)
Vigilance
Enforcers
Guardians
Blood of Heroes
Necessary Evil/Savage World

I'm sure there were a few others as well. I've read Abberant, but didn't do anything with it. Always wanted to try Brave New World ;)

If you get the opportunity I think you should check it out. I think you might be pleasantly surprised with M&M modifications to the standard D20 system.

My one complaint about M&M is the lack of a tactical system ... though I'm working on that ;)

Kind of like Champions ... how everything is very Miniatures friendly. I like using minis when I can :)

In order of play:

Marvel Super Heroes (and Advanced)
Villains & Vigilantes
Golden Heroes
Champions
Heart and Soul

I've got a BUNCH of other superhero RPGs, but only mined them for ideas.

I forgot to add that I'd read Heroes Unlimited (absolutely hatted the character generation), Golden Heroes (which I thought was interesting, but never got a chance to play), and Silver Age Sentinels (D20 version). Thought SAS was very similar to Champions, it just didn't click with me.

V&V (of course)
Marvel Superheroes (Both Basic and Advanced)
DC Heroes (1st Edition)
Champions (3rd Edition & 4th Edition aka Big Blue Book)
Heroes Unlimited/TMNT/Ninjas & Superspies/Mystic China
GURPS Supers

I've read the following but never actually played them:
Crimefighters (Pulp Mystery Men RPG from Dragon #47)
Agent 13 Top Secret Sourcebook (playing Pulp Mystery Men in Top Secret)
M&M
DC Universe (d6 rules)
I've also read a few of the independent d20 Supers game that came out when 3e first hit the market but I can't remember what they were called.

I always wanted to give Superworld a try. Maybe one of these days I will.

Cheers,
Tim

For those of you that have played Freelancers, how is the system?

I love the Top Secret SI system. It is percentile based (00-99, not 1-100), lower being better. Skills adding to your stats for target numbers. Difficulty modifiers drop your ratings to 1/2 or 1/4 depending on severity. Lucky breaks at low levels 00-04, bad mojo at 95-99. Damage to a character is either bruise or wound, and uses a hit location chart per body section. If a location fills up with bruise damage, it starts becoming wound damage. The game can be VERY lethal, VERY easily.

I probably won't be as eloquent as I could or should when describing it. What kind of questions do you have that are not answered there?

V&V
Marvel Super-Heroes (FASERIP)
DC Heroes
Heroes Unlimited / TMNT / Beyond the Supernatural
Superworld
Psi-World

Read but never played:

Champions
GURPS Supers

For those of you have played multiple systems, have you ever played the same character in different systems? What kind of adjustments did you have to make when converting from one system to another? Do you feel you lost any of the core elements of the character when converting?

Chimaera
09-16-2008, 01:03 PM
V&V
FASERIP Marvel
Champions in various iterations
Heroes Unlimited
TMNT and Other Strangeness
Superworld
Silver Age Sentinels
Mutants & Masterminds
GURPS Supers

There may be a couple I'm forgetting...

D'oh!! Like DC Heroes (MEGS)

I loved GURPS Supers, it was definitely my favourite point-system game, much better than Champions. Marvel was fun. And I loved V&V, despite being home-brewed into near-unrecognizability. My namesake character, Chimaera, was a telepathic shapeshifter and has never been realized as well in any system as he was in V&V. It kinda worked in Marvel and in M&M. But the strength being based on mass bit is the *key* to a minimum-kludge mechanical realization of shape/mass-changers.

I've played them all - even if only once...

V&V
Marvel Super-Heroes (FASERIP)
DC Heroes
Champions
GURPS Supers
Heroes Unlimited / TMNT
Psi-World

...and I have the M&M 2nd ed. book.

I've tried to realize characters of Marvel power in many systems, and somehow I dig V&V even over the Marvel system due to its "Limited by Number of Powers" not points, style.

So I can Munchkiny "stack" a few Mega Powers in V&V to get nasty, but that is by design and intent when I do that.

This "As You Wish" aspect of V&V just makes me WANT to create PCs.

And it also makes combat a nightmare.

I dug Marvel's FASERIP and simplicity when dealing with their characters. I thought DC was the ONLY way to fly when going for Cosmic scale - and then had a guy show me how good it was on the Low-end too.

I won first prize in a Con role-playing DC Heroes, so it has a special place in my heart. :D

I hope to make a homebrew that grabs DC Heroes APs (and Motivations), Marvel's combat (and rank names) and V&V's creation style together.

I think I'll call it "The Ungodly" as in "This is one ungodly mess!"

:D :D :D

How are characters built, and what type of power levels are you dealing with? Low level or Superman category?

Low level supers - excellent for street level or low Batman. Random rolls for stats. Pick and choose advantages/disads, pick and choose powers. Pick a profession that gives you guidelines on minimum points to be spent in certain skill groups (soldier, for example, has you put points into combat, general skills, and I forget what else). So you start with (I think) 30 skill points, and have to assign so many points to each group based on your profession (there is a jack of all trades profession). But different skills cost different amounts for each level, and some have prerequisites. Basic firearms is a prereq for pistols. I'll try to get out my rulebook tonight and give a little more info on it.

the marvel and DC versions came out weak (ie. no h.att lol)

Oh, no - I was just looking at Supers!

Many an evil GM has gotten me to play another system for a while.

:stoner:

And of course, I enjoyed it.

But the relationship was brief without a deeper heartfelt connection.

I have used a few across a few systems. The conversion process was pretty simple, and the only adjustments were shifting powers where appropriate and scaling as per the systems needs. For example, taking something from Marvel Saga (a very open and story driven system) and placing it into Hero (a more system-driven game) requires a little shaving off the corners to make that hex a circle ;)

Only a lot of V&V and some Champions for me!!!
