I know this is going to be painful for a couple of you, but Green Ronin's Mutants and Masterminds RPG is currently my favorite superhero gaming system. IMHO, it's tied with V&V as one of my all time favorite games. It seems to combine elements of a lot of games that came before it, namely V&V, Champions, and DC Heroes (all of which I've liked). I love how easily I can create characters, and how simple the actual game mechanics are. I've been playing it since 03, and before heading out on this deployment, had a regular game going. Any of you guys play, and have you looked at the system?

I agree wholeheartedly :) Been running it since 1st ed and really enjoy how well it emulates the genre :)

Id really like to play some M&M to give it a shot. A friend of mine play tested for the second edition version, and he says its vastly superior to the initial release.

2nd edition is very good. And the system is very simple. One thing I really like with it is that you only need one die: a d20. Also like the point-buy aspect of it.

We were working on getting a M&M2 game going last fall. What I didn't like was character creation. To me, it was more time consuming than Hero System. For a point system, Hero clicked with me. M&M with the cross-checks and this power adds here, make sure it doesn't go over cap there, ended up being more time consuming for me.

It just takes time to get used to the system. Once you get the hang of things, you can fly through character creation (well as long as you keep the builds fairly simple). Now if you want to start getting into all of the funky power write-ups, it'll take some time. But over all, IMHO, it's a whole lot easier to build character using M&M as compared to HERO.

M&M doesn't use "levels" as you're familiar with. They use power levels as a way to keep characters balanced. They've got examples of characters, powers, and character creation on the M&M website, so you can see examples of how it works. If you get some time, swing by and check them out.

What the levels do is put a cap on the max stats, skills and powers.
You usually start at lvl 10. Everything is point-buy, including your attacks and defenses.

Thanks Magnus, that's a lot clearer description of the way levels actually work.

MnM 2e gets Kudos just for fixing their movement systems by making it more of a movement system. (Nothing spelled incorrectly in previous sentence.)

2nd edition loosened that a bit. In first your character absolutely could not get 11th power level (PL) abillities if he was PL 10. He could get 15th level effects on a crit, but 11th was harder. He'd have to get the experience. Now the GM can let a 10th have some 12th level abilities if he chooses.

I've actually been kicking around converting some old V&V characters from the books and using them in V&V. I know that there's been a few people on the ATT that've been converting Hero and V&V characters ... but I'd like to convert everything ... history, images, the whole she-bang ;)

As for the Hero/M&M differences and such ... I don't find them all that different in mechanics. The math is a bit smoother in M&M, but about the same mechanically.

I like the mechanics of M&M when I gave it a go but their system for disads and/or limited powers failed to satisfy and i didn't like that, more than normal in a supers game, everything was so vanilla.

Could you be more specific about which parts of the power limitations and disadvantages you didn't like?
