An interesting article in the NY Times about the state of the movie the Hobbit.

This one in general has me a little puzzled On one hand PJ should rightly persue the studio for all the money that was due to him for making them $2.9 Billion dollars. On the other, PJ has made millions already, how much more does he need?

In February 2005 Mr. Jackson sued New Line, saying he was owed money from the trilogy. Mr. Jackson has said he sued over profits from “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” after he was unable to get New Line to submit to an independent audit of its books. The lawsuit, which was unsuccessfully mediated, still has no court date, and so far no audit has taken place. New Line executives have complained that Mr. Jackson has become vastly wealthy from the Tolkien trilogy and is unjustifiably portraying himself as a victim.
Highlighting is my own.
While I do understand the point made by New Line execs, I cannot agree. Regardless of how much money he has made from the movies, they had a contract to pay him based on the income of the movies. So, with their reasoning, just because he made tons of cash, they can decide he has made enough and choose not to pay him anymore?
Sorry, that is wrong, regardless of the total payout.
Rather pathetic IMO.

Its funny listening to excutives of a multi-billion dollar company complaining someone made enough money.

Perhaps we should curtain how much their company makes from a product?

the execs are definitely hypocritic little boys. screw 'em. and frankly, the more i think about it, a different director may not be such a bad thing. although getting weta to work on the FX would be a good idea, i think.

When you have a contract, you fulfill the terms of that contract. Period. It doesn't matter how much money Peter Jackson made. They made a LOT more, and they are very cleverly trying to portray themselves as the victim by saying that he's rich enough.

Peter Jackson did good work, and everybody except their lawyers realize that. You should reward good employees by honoring the terms of your @##@$#@, (*&(*# contract with them, you idiots. And maybe a bonus on top of that.

It's nice to know that even at that level, companies try to screw you. It makes me feel a little better about my treatment at the hand of companies that employ me.

Stupid newline dweebs. I hate it when i hear about rich arse holes want to make themselves richer by dishonoring contracts. Grrrrr... and then to play ball by dumping jackson from something like the hobbit. :cussing:

This bit though warms my heart...
“We expect to partner with New Line in financing ‘The Hobbit,’ ” a spokesman for MGM said. “We support Peter Jackson as a filmmaker, and believe that when the dust settles, he’ll be making the movie. We can’t imagine any other result.”

Looks like MGM going to play the parent and force the two to play nice... lol!
