having grown up in new jersey, i became accustomed to the way the newark star ledger covered the giants and have long been fond of their sports page, even after discovering the new york daily news: they’re less prone to the overheated rhetoric i’ve come to expect in so much sports media.
anyway, while reading their online post-superbowl coverage, i encountered this (http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1202189749212240.xml&coll=1) article, an interview with the giants players of superbowls XXI and XXV, including legendary giants QB and CBS sportscaster phil simms and the last great giants tight end, mark bavaro. i want to draw your attention however to the words of mark bavaro particularly, who said largely the same thing his QB said but w/ a particularly memorable metaphor, i thought:
mark bavaro quoth:
“i guess a little bit of both,” [his feelings about welcoming this giants team to the franchise championship club] he said via cell phone while driving home to massachusetts after watching the game at a party in manhattan. “‘you belong with us,’ but the reality is they put us to rest. put us out to pasture. we’ve got to move out of the way for them now...”
“i told my wife, ‘we’re the andy robustellis and frank giffords of this team’s generation.’”
this to me is a beautiful quotation because it acknowledge both his own accomplishments, but also that this giants team deserves to have the spotlight all to its own, not somehow be compared to a championship of 17 or 21 years ago—as if their accomplishments don’t merit respect in their own right.
and i think that’s a beautiful thing.
